Sharp Top (and its sister peak, Flat Top) are two of the most popular hikes in the Lynchburg area. This 1.5 mile trail ascends 1,300 feet through the forests on Sharp Top Mountain to spectacular 360° views of the Peaks of Otter and surrounding landscape.
Apple Orchard Mountain is our favorite natural place in the Lynchburg area! In the spring, the native wildflowers put on a show, and many warblers and other breeding birds can be found here. Nevertheless, this is a great hike for any time of year! This out-and-back 1.5 mile hike meanders along North Creek until it reaches a 200-ft waterfall. We recommend parking at the Sunset Fields Overlook (Milepost 78) on the Blue Ridge Parkway and starting at this trailhead.
Learn about the history of the James River Gorge, enjoy a shady picnic along the river, or explore the trails around the Visitor Center. From the Visitor Center, cross the river on the pedestrian bridge to view an intact lock along the Kanawha Canal system!
Situated in Appomattox County just 30 minutes outside of Lynchburg is the site where the Civil War ended. Be sure to explore this (free!) National Park and visit the surrender grounds as well as the many trails that meander through old battlefields.
Experience one of the nation's oldest markets! Located in downtown Lynchburg, the market offers coffee, baked goods, fresh produce, flowers, and an assortment of crafts and other homemade items. Visit the market Saturday morning, then we suggest wandering over to the Bluffwalk overlooking the James River or walking the paved hike/bike trail onto Percival's Island. See you at the ceremony!
With its roots in Farmville, VA, 3 Roads Brewing opened a second taproom right here in Lynchburg, VA! Sip on craft beer while hanging out with friends, playing games, or listening to live music. Ashley's go-to beer is the Top Down Blonde Lemongrass Ale, while Collin fancies the N150 IPA.
If you are looking for a more relaxed beer-sipping setting, be sure to check out Apocalypse Ale Works. This brewery features porch seating, yard games, and live music on Friday nights. Ashley's favorite beer here is the Mandarin Censor, and Collin recommends the ESB (if you're into that kind of thing)!
