Travel & Things To Do

We imagine most guests will fly in and out of Barcelona, which is a major international hub with direct flights to and from the US and other Spanish and European airports. You may also choose to fly into Madrid, which is connected to Barcelona via a high-speed train that takes 2.5-3 hours. If you plan to explore the Costa Brava, we recommend renting a car, as public transportation between towns is limited. It is possible to arrive to Cala Canyelles via public transportation, but if you want to easily visit other beaches and towns nearby, having a car will help a lot. Car rentals are generally very affordable in Spain and driving in the country is easy. Below are some ideas of things to do in the Costa Brava area. If you'll be spending more time in Spain, some of our other favorite places are Galicia, Asturias, Valencia, and the Pyrenees Mountains. If you're flying in or out of Madrid and would like recommendations of neighborhoods or things to do there, just let us know!

Our Favorite Costa Brava Towns

Tossa de Mar Calella de Palafrugell Pals L'Escala Cadaqués

Camí de Ronda

The Camí de Ronda is a hiking trail that passes right through Cala Canyelles. You can even walk the path to Tossa de Mar if you'd like! Some parts are on paved roads, and others on trails. The entire "camino" is 217km long, and starts in Blanes and ends at the French border.

Explore Girona

Girona is a 45 min drive from Cala Canyelles or a 40 min train ride from Barcelona. It's a smaller city known for its historic Jewish Quarter (where some scenes from Games of Thrones were filmed), Cathedral, and Medieval Walls. Girona is also considered one of the major cycling capitals of the world, with dozens of professional cyclists training there at any given time. Lastly, there is great hiking around Girona. We love hiking in the Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa or the Alta Garrotxa areas. If you have questions about Girona or the surrounding areas, don't hesitate to let us know!

Explore Barcelona

Sights to see: Park Güell Sagrada Familia Santa Maria de Mar church (inspired Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia) Cathedral Barceloneta Beach - walk around, grab some food, good people watching! Montjüic - park with castle, botanical gardens, museum and also stadiums from the 1992 Olympics. Picasso Museum Neighborhoods in Barcelona: Gracia: Upscale neighborhood with shops, restaurants, and fun vibe. I recommend to stay on the “lower” side so you’re closer to the beach and center. Gothic Quarter: A lot of people choose to stay in this area since it’s right in the mix of things. El Born: Close to everything and historic!

Explore Figueres

Figueres is the capital city of Alt Empordà county, and is ~1 hour drive from Cala Canyelles (or ~1.5 hours from Barcelona by train). The birthplace of artist Salvador Dalí, Figueres is home to the famous Dalí theater and museum designed by Dalí himself. This small city is worth visiting on a day trip if you have extra time!
