Cultural Traditions

We know many of our guests come from different cultural backgrounds, and part of the joy of this celebration is sharing the moments that shape an Indian-American wedding. We hope this page offers a helpful picture of what you’ll see and invites you to celebrate alongside us with curiosity and love.

Vows

Vows are promises made before God, family, and friends. They reflect the couple’s commitment to Christ-centered love, faith, and unity.

Communion

“Now, as they were eating, Jesus took bread and after blessing it, broke it and gave it to the disciples and said, ‘Take, eat. This is my body.’ And he took a cup. And when he’d given thanks, he gave it to them saying, ‘Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many, for the forgiveness of sins.” – Matthew 26:26-28 Communion is a symbol remembering the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a time for reflection, not only on an individual’s sin and need of forgiveness but on the grace and love that Christ exhibited on the cross through His death. Jesus took on our sin, paid the price of death for our salvation, and was resurrected, restoring our relationship with God. Through the resurrection of Jesus we have the promise of new life, freedom, and redemption in Him. Including communion in our ceremony reflects our desire for a marriage shaped by God's grace, sustained by His redemption, and continually renewed through faith.

Varmala (Garland Exchange)

A playful and symbolic moment during the ceremony where the couple exchanges floral garlands, representing respect and the beginning of their union.

First Dances

A special moment during the reception where the couple shares their first dance as a married couple, followed by a mother-son dance and a father-daughter dance. It often marks the transition from ceremony to celebration and the beginning of the couple as a new family!

Mehendi (Henna)

A casual, intimate, pre-wedding gathering for the bridal party and immediate family where intricate henna designs are applied to the hands. It’s a time for mingling, music, and celebrating love, with traditions symbolizing joy and beauty.

Sangeet (Song and Dance)

The Sangeet is a joyful North Indian tradition celebrating the union of two families through performances of music and dance, telling stories and sharing emotions in a creative way. On our day, you’ll see a glimpse of this celebration led by Mokshvi’s family-it’s her favorite wedding tradition!
