Initially it was nothing. At a bar in Monterey one night Cole spotted Melinda and her striking red hair and thought "Well, I think I might like to talk to her," and then he did. She was polite and interested but to no significant extent. However they had karaoke that night and he went up and sang "500 Miles" by the Proclaimers, just bringing down the whole house, and the tenor of the conversation changed. After that they danced around a mutual attraction through text messages and more drinks and dinners and eventually decided "Well I really enjoy this person's company, why don't we just go ahead and become a couple?" And so they did and every conversation and adventure together made them understand each other more and even every fight only ultimately brought them closer. They had both been through some rough relationships and for once they both felt totally comfortable and understood. There had never been anything else like it. Ultimately these two, who both had won their own respective lotteries in meeting each other, decided they may as well try to capture lightning in a bottle. When Cole proposed to Melinda over a pile of baked Brie in "Nowhere," Florida it was an anticlimax because they'd already decided they wanted to marry each other months earlier, because they were partners who loved each other to a devastating extent and because they made decisions together. So now they're here, two anxious people who can't for the life of them feel anything but pure, unbridled excitement to spend the rest of their lives with each other.
