How It All Happened

Our romance began like many others: with a conversation about dead fish. A mutual friend had convinced us to go on a spring break trip to Milwaukee during our freshman year at the University of Minnesota. But first, we had a planning session the night before at a burrito bar near campus (where they were showing a documentary about a fish kill on the TV). The trip was a crash course in how the others’ sense of humor, and luckily, they were similar; many inside jokes were created within a few days of meeting each other, and we still reference them to this day six years later. To prove how dedicated to the bit she was, Jenni ate a stray French fry off the street; Colby in turn, responded with flirting so obvious that everyone knew what was going on. At the end of the trip, we agreed to go on a run together, which we later coined as our first ‘half date’. Colby lasted nine miles before Jenni needed to drop him off, while she ran six more miles to complete her training run. From then on, there were many dinner dates in the dining hall, movie dates at the student union, and ice cream trips to the St. Paul student center. Soon the semester was over, and we went our separate ways back to our hometowns. Just kidding–we saw each other almost every week that summer, exploring state parks and each other's favorite local spots. Before we knew it, we had finished up our bachelor’s degrees and decided to move in together at our new apartment in Minneapolis. Colby decided grad school on its own isn’t difficult enough, so we decided to adopt a shelter dog. We named him Hank, and kept him a secret from our families until he was settled in at home in our apartment. This September, we decided to go on a camping trip to Itasca State Park. After a beautiful afternoon of paddleboarding, Colby popped the question when we got back on land (yes, he had the ring loose in his swimsuit pocket the whole time). Through the years, we have gone on many adventures and cannot wait to begin the next one with all of our friends and family!
