For a unique way to experience Lisbon, hop aboard a vintage streetcar and ride up and down the city’s hills. The most famous route is taken by Tram 28. The route (48 minutes) carries you up, down, and through historical neighborhoods such as the Graça, Alfama, Chiado, and Campo de Ourique. Alfama is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon and gives off iconic ‘old Lisbon’ energy with narrow streets and alleyways, colourful buildings, old trams and cobblestones. A great way to see Alfama is via tuk tuk tour. Two good companies: 1. Tuk On Me Sightseeing Tours and 2. Tuk Away Miradouro Santa Luiza is a famous viewpoint in Lisbon, offering spectacular views over the Alfama and the Tagus River.
Lisbon Cathedral or simply the Sé (Sé de Lisboa), is the oldest church in the city. Built in 1147, the cathedral has survived many earthquakes. The cathedral sits in the heart of the Baixa, Lisbon’s downtown and you can visit it on the way to Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Climb up the stairs to get a great view of Lisbon! There are always lots of Tuk Tuks for hire waiting outside the Cathedral, which you can ride for a tour of the city.
Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon’s main avenue for luxury shopping. Designed in the 19th century, Avenida da Liberdade connects Marquês de Pombal and Restauradores Square. The avenue’s design aimed to mimic Paris’ iconic boulevards and chicness. A wide green promenade, paved with the traditional, yet leafy cobblestone, where people went along the decades to see and be seen.
One of Lisbon’s most iconic squares is also one of the largest squares in Europe. It is known by locals as Terreiro do Paço, since it was once where the paço (palace) used to stand before the earthquake in 1755. Make Praça do Comércio your starting point for discovering the city.
