The village offers many shops, clothing stores, antique stores, restaurants, etc along the lake. You can also walk around Genesee Street and West Lake Street to see some of the more historic homes. There is public lake access for swimming, and while the water and air temperatures will certainly be cooler, the average early October lake temperature is 60 degrees.
There are scenic and historical boat cruises and including some with lunch /dinner options around Skaneateles Lake that discuss the lake ecology, historic homes, and regional history.
Apple orchard with great apple picking, they also have an onsite bar that serves their 1911 ciders and liquors distilled there.
The local town pub, sports are usually on, great wings. A "beef on weck" sandwich is a must. (Cody's favorite, an upstate NY specialty roast beef sandwich served with au jus)
Doug's has been serving fresh seafood since 1982. Menu is simple and includes fish and chips, steamed clams, chowder, and a superb lobster roll (Mary's favorite is a lobster roll and fries with tartar sauce)
For History Buffs! The home the Harriet Tubman lived in from 1859 until she passed in 1913, really interesting history museum and highlights the Underground Railroad presence and abolitionist history in the area. As a bonus, on the same street in Auburn is the William Seward (Alaska!) house, where the former Secretary of State lived and is now a museum (you can see the carriage he was in during the 1865 assassination attempt that was part of the broader plot and Lincoln assassination)
Originally started by Phil Romano (founder of Romano's Macaroni Grill and Fudruckers) for his sister Rosalie, it's classic rustic Italian fare, great portions and energy
One of the most beautiful spas we've ever been to, gorgeous art, multiple cold plunge pools, saunas, hiking trails, steam rooms and indoor/outdoor pools
The very famous Mackenzie Childs is not far from Skaneateles and the flagship factory and store is divided into three sections. One features their latest items. The Outlet Room displays discounted vintage pieces, high-quality seconds, and original samples, all up to 70% off. Finally, the Christmas Room is filled year-round with holiday items.
Well maintained hiking trails around a gorge with waterfalls, about 30 minutes south of the village of Skaneateles. Named after 13th and last elected Whig-Party President Millard Fillmore, who was born in the finger lakes
Little local hidden gem waterfall about 15 minute drive from the village, there's a nice boardwalk now to a view point and there's a bit of a trail to follow to closer to and under the falls for more intrepid hikers.
Located west of Skaneateles on Seneca Lake, Ravines is one of our favorite wineries in the Finger Lakes. Mary sent a few bottles of their Chardonnay and Dry Reislings back to the Wheat's, both of which got rave reviews. From Skaneateles, it's just under an hour to their tasting room.
A great little yoga studio in the village, with an awesome view of the lake
