Bom Jesus do Monte
Built in 1784, the Bom Jesus do Monte is reached via its 577-step granite staircase boasting 17 landings adorned with fountains and statues. On arrival at the church, absorb the sweeping views before entering to view the interior and altarpiece depicting Jesus’ crucifixion. If you’re not able to climb the stairs, you can ride a 19th-century funicular up and down the hillside. A beautiful place to visit to fill your time during your trip!
Guimarães Castle
Roughly 25 minutes from the center of Braga lays the Guimarães Castle which is widely associated with the origins of the Portuguese nation. Cody and I loved visiting this amazing landmark, its definitely a must see if you have the time!
Luís I Bridge
Only 55 minutes from Braga's center, Porto is the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon. Located on the Douro River, Porto has a unique atmosphere with elegant neighborhoods and large villas sitting on narrow cobbled streets. Cody and I thoroughly enjoyed all the amazing architecture and views that we came across during our walks through the city!
Peneda-Gerês National Park
Located 52 minutes away from the center of Braga, Gerês National Park is the first and only national park in Portugal. Gerês can be easily explored by car, as many roads connect the remote villages and beautiful viewpoints in the park. However, the best thing to do is to park and get out on a trail, where you'll find beautiful waterfalls and river beaches worth taking a dip in!
