No, U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, including St. John. A valid REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other TSA-approved ID is required to fly into St. Thomas (STT). While a passport is not necessary, bringing a passport or a copy of your birth certificate may help speed up the U.S. Customs process when departing the islands.
To get to St. John, you’ll fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on the island of St. Thomas, located just outside Charlotte Amalie. St. John does not have its own airport, so from there, you'll take a taxi to the Red Hook Ferry Terminal (about 30 minutes), then a 15-minute ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John. Once you arrive in Cruz Bay, you’ll be just minutes from both The Hills and Grande Bay Resort.
We recommend traveling to St. John on Friday, July 17th, 2026 to give yourself plenty of time to settle in, reset, and explore before the weekend begins. Our Welcome Party will be held on Saturday, July 18th, followed by the wedding on Sunday, July 19th. That said, if you prefer to travel in on Saturday, please feel free—there’s no requirement to arrive early. We just want everyone to feel relaxed and enjoy the experience in whatever way works best for them! Guests staying at The Hills should plan for a minimum five-night stay, so we encourage you to make a vacation out of it and hang out with us throughout the week!
We’ve reserved eleven villas exclusively for our guests at The Hills: Bougainvillea, Bethel Vista, Twilight, Agave, Seagrape, Guavaberry, Cocoplum, Papaya, Mimosa, Poinciana, and Pineapple Villas. Please note: These villas will not be available to book online. To reserve or inquire about one of these villas, you must contact The Hills directly at 866‑871‑5643 or via email at inquiries@vacationvi.com, and reference the Furey wedding on July 19, 2026. Villas are only being held up to six months in advance of the wedding. To secure your villa, a deposit must be made by January 19, 2026, with the remaining balance due 60 days in advance, by May 19, 2026. Any villas not booked or secured with a deposit by that date will be released back into the general rental pool.
Grande Bay Resort is our secondary recommended accommodation for guests not staying at The Hills. There is no room block, so booking is simple—just visit the Grande Bay website and book directly for our wedding dates. It’s located in Cruz Bay, just steps from the ferry dock, restaurants, and shops. We recommend booking early, as summer availability can be limited. Grande Bay guests will also have shuttle transportation provided to and from all wedding events, so you can relax and enjoy the weekend without worrying about driving.
Yes, there are other accommodation options on St. John! While we would love for everyone to stay at The Hills, we understand that may not work for all guests. Our secondary accommodation option is Grande Bay Resort, located right in Cruz Bay. We are only providing transportation to and from wedding events for guests staying at Grande Bay Resort. If you choose to stay elsewhere, you will need to arrange your own transportation to and from all wedding events. Please also note that The Hills does not offer on-site guest parking. Parking is available only for those renting a villa at the property, so guests staying elsewhere will need to coordinate their own drop-off and pick-up transportation.
On the Travel page, you’ll find our three most recommended car rental companies located right on St. John. Many will arrange to meet you at the ferry dock, or are conveniently located just above the island’s only roundabout in Cruz Bay. St. John uses U.S. mainland-style vehicles (steering wheel on the left), but you’ll be driving on the left side of the road. The roads are steep, narrow, and full of sharp switchbacks, so drive cautiously—but don’t worry, the island-wide speed limit is just 25 mph, making for a laid-back experience. We highly recommend renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle, as many roads and driveways are uneven or unpaved. Local rental companies are small, friendly, and experienced in working with visitors—especially during wedding weekends—so be sure to book early. If you're not planning to drive, you're still covered. Taxis and open-air safari vans are easy to find around Cruz Bay and near popular beaches. These are a great option if you’d prefer not to drive or simply want to sit back and enjoy the ride. For guests staying at Grande Bay Resort, we will be providing transportation to and from all wedding events, so you can fully relax and enjoy the celebration.
Guests staying at Grande Bay Resort will have complimentary transportation provided to and from all wedding events throughout the weekend. We’ll be coordinating shuttle service based on guest arrival information and event timing. As the date approaches, we’ll send out a quick form or message to gather your arrival details and headcounts so we can make sure everyone is included in the schedule. No need to arrange anything yourself—just relax and be ready in the lobby at the designated times we’ll provide closer to the event!
Yes, we recommend bringing some cash, as not all places on St. John accept credit cards—especially taxis, beach vendors, and smaller local shops. While there are a few ATMs in Cruz Bay, they can sometimes run out of cash or charge higher fees, especially during busy times. We usually travel with around $200 in cash to make sure we're covered for things like taxis, tips, and smaller purchases throughout the trip. Bringing small bills is helpful too!
July in St. John is warm, sunny, and tropical—perfect for beach days! You can expect daytime highs around 89°F and evening lows near 79°F. There’s a chance of light, brief rain showers, but they usually pass quickly. The ocean is warm (around 82°F) and ideal for swimming and snorkeling. While July falls within hurricane season, major storms are rare—we just recommend keeping an eye on the forecast as your trip gets closer.
Think beach formal or island chic—light, breathable fabrics, fun colors, and shoes you’re comfortable in. The welcome party will be more casual, so feel free to keep it relaxed with tropical prints and easygoing attire. The wedding will be a bit more formal—sundresses, lightweight suits, and dressier sandals or flats are perfect. The most important thing is that you feel good and enjoy yourself, so wear whatever you're comfortable in while keeping the tropical setting in mind!
St. John only allows reef-safe mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene are banned to protect the coral reefs. We recommend bringing your own, as reef-safe options can be limited and expensive on the island. Good brands include Blue Lizard, ThinkSport, Badger, and Raw Elements. Avoid sprays when possible.
While Trunk Bay is one of the few beaches on St. John with on-site snorkel rentals, availability can be limited, and the beach often gets crowded. There are also a few snorkel rental shops in both Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, though selection may vary by season. If you plan to snorkel at multiple beaches, it's a good idea to bring your own gear—including a mask, snorkel, and fins—for convenience and flexibility. Fortunately, if you're staying at The Hills, snorkel gear is available on-site for guests, making it easy to explore the island’s waters without needing to rent elsewhere.
Yes! St. John has several grocery stores, mostly located in and around Cruz Bay. Popular options include Dolphin Market, Starfish Market, and St. John Market. These stores carry a range of essentials including snacks, drinks, sunscreen, and fresh groceries. Keep in mind that prices may be a bit higher than the mainland, and selection can vary—so if there’s something specific you need, it’s a good idea to pack it or bring it with you. Most stores accept credit cards.
All registry information can be found on the Registry page of our wedding website via Zola. Your presence is truly the greatest gift, but if you’d like to contribute, we’ve set up a honeymoon fund through Zola to help us enjoy our first days as newlyweds in St. John. Anything you choose to give is deeply appreciated—but absolutely not expected!
Yes, we recommend purchasing travel insurance. While hurricanes are unlikely in mid-July, St. John is technically in hurricane season. We personally always get travel insurance for our flights and accommodations—better safe than sorry!
