Colleen and Cliff have always enjoyed this local brewery. They would stop by Alibi after a long hike, after a day on the beach, or after a day on the slopes at Northstar. Both Cliff and Colleen love the "Contradiction!" There is also an Alibi Ale Works in Incline Village. The brewery is kid friendly and dog friendly (outdoors at the Truckee location only).
Mount Tallac is the tallest peak on the Lake Tahoe shoreline. The hike to the top is a strenuous 5 miles up (3,000 feet elevation gain) - be sure to bring snacks, plenty of water, and sunscreen. Colleen and Cliff summitted Mount Tallac as part of their first backpacking trip in August 2016!
Colleen and Cliff's very first hike was to Shirley Lake in Palisades (July 2015). The hike to Shirley lake is 3 miles up. From their, you can hike another 2 miles up to High Camp. It is a challenging hike with 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Sturdy shoes, water, snacks, and sunscreen. High Camp has a small market, restrooms, a roller rink, and a disc golf course. Hikers from Shirley Lake can take a free ride down on the tram. If you're not interested in the hike, but still want a killer view, you can take the tram up from the base of Palisades. It runs Friday-Sunday 10AM-4:20PM with the last tram down leaving High Camp at 5PM.
Emerald Bay is absolutely beautiful and we strongly recommend taking a trip to see it. You can get great views from the top (though parking can sometimes be difficult). You can also hike down to Vikingsholm the Viking castle at the lake. It is about 5.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of around 500 feet.
Sand Harbor is an iconic beach in Tahoe. It has great views, crystal clear waters, neat rock formations, and is awesome for swimming and kayaking. There is small cafe where you can get drinks and snacks, but we recommend packing a cooler and making your own sandwiches. Sand Harbor has become so popular, that starting in April 2025 they are requiring reservations 7 days a week to get into the beach.
