It was a hot Saturday in September, and to Laura, it was a trip to Capitola like any other. After parking, she questioned why Nick needed his heavy coat. But unbeknownst to her, Nick was frantically trying to conceal an oversized ring box. He had a plan, a backup plan, and a backup-backup plan, to make it a proposal Laura wouldn’t forget. And so, the couple set off into the charming seaside town, one of their favorite spots to get away from the bustle of daily life. But today, Nick was anything but relaxed. Together with their dog Rosie, they walked to a “secret” alcove with a view overlooking the Monterey Bay. It being Labor Day weekend, the “secret” was out, the alcove was packed with surfers and onlookers. Rosie, unhappy with the congestion, began to make a scene. Laura, sensing the nervous energy (from both Rosie and Nick) suggested they continue their walk. Nick quickly pivoted to backup plan number one. Walking across the sandy beach, Rosie’s tantrum continued as they approached some kids with a highly coveted frisbee. The backup plan was simply not going to work; nobody wants their proposal serenaded by a screaming dog. Now Nick is downright frustrated—and sweating. Realizing the backup-backup required a significant walk in the now sweltering coat, Nick was nearly at a loss for what to do. Sensing his frustration with Rosie’s overstimulation, Laura suggested they take a break at a quiet bench by the Soquel Creek. After several deep breaths, Nick realized that this spot had all the qualities he was looking for—privacy, a beautiful setting and quiet. Gathering himself, he was on the precipice of a long and flowery speech, when Laura blurted, “Oh my God, is it happening?!” The ensuing laughter broke the tension and made for a beautiful, natural moment. Upon reflection, the couple can now laugh about how their proposal story is a microcosm of life. Things don’t always go to plan, or the backup plan, or backup-backup plan. And sometimes it’s really hot. But as long as we are together, we can overcome life’s challenges. In that spirit, we invite you to join us as we say, “I do” and hope to God we don’t need a backup plan.
