Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bat Bridge

Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bat Bridge

South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704

One of Austin’s most iconic (and unexpectedly magical) experiences. At sunset, hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge, filling the sky as they head out for the night. It’s a uniquely Austin moment — equal parts weird, wonderful, and memorable. You can watch from the bridge itself, the riverwalk below, or even from a kayak or paddleboard on the water. Peak viewing is around dusk, especially in warmer months. Pro tip: Arrive a little early, grab a drink nearby, and plan to arrive for sunset — it’s worth it!
