7/1/20 Because of the recent changes in the Covid-19 situation as well as the restrictions of international travel, we have made the extremely difficult decision to no longer have the celebration of our wedding as we originally planned. We dearly wish you could all be with us as we say our vows, but everyone's health and safety takes first priority. We will still get married on September 5th, just without all our favorite people in attendance. We cannot express how sad this makes us, and how sorry we are for any inconvenience this may cause. However, we fully plan to have a celebration with all of you at a future date! We will be sure to keep you updated as our plans evolve! We met at work! More specifically, we met at the office Christmas party. Hendrik had been in the US and working for our company for over two months, but since we work on different floors, we'd never even seen each other. Until a coworker introduced us at the Christmas party. He was handsome as heck and had a cute accent, I had my black dress on, whiskey in hand. When we met for brunch the next weekend, I was fully prepared to let him know that I was not comfortable dating a coworker. But for some reason I just couldn't bring it up. Two more dates went by, and I still couldn't seem to find the right moment. It was all just too... serendipitous. A few months went by, and I was about to leave to live in Switzerland for nine months for work. The weekend before I left was my sister's wedding. It was there, seeing him interacting with my family, seeing my family's reaction to him, that I knew this was it. The distance sucked, but I think we both knew that in the scheme of things, for us, nine months was nothing. -Claire

Wir haben uns bei der Arbeit getroffen! Genauer gesagt trafen wir uns auf der Weihnachtsfeier im Büro. Hendrik war über zwei Monate in den USA und hat für unser Unternehmen gearbeitet, aber da wir auf verschiedenen Etagen arbeiten, haben wir uns noch nie gesehen. Bis uns ein Mitarbeiter auf der Weihnachtsfeier vorstellte. Er war verdammt gutaussehend und hatte einen süßen Akzent, ich hatte mein schwarzes Kleid an, Whiskey in der Hand. Als wir uns am nächsten Wochenende zum Brunch trafen, war ich voll und ganz darauf vorbereitet, ihm mitzuteilen, dass ich mich mit einem Kollegen nicht wohl fühlte. Aber aus irgendeinem Grund konnte ich es einfach nicht ansprechen. Zwei weitere Verabredungen vergingen und ich schien immer noch nicht den richtigen Moment zu finden. Es war alles einfach zu ... zufällig. Ein paar Monate vergingen, und ich war kurz davor, neun Monate in der Schweiz zu arbeiten. Das Wochenende vor meiner Abreise war die Hochzeit meiner Schwester. Es war dort, als ich sah, wie er mit meiner Familie interagierte und wie meine Familie auf ihn reagierte, dass ich wusste, dass es das war. Die Entfernung war schlecht, aber ich denke, wir wussten beide, dass für uns neun Monate nichts waren. -Claire

The first person I told about my plans were my little brother Julian and he absolutely felt the same way and supported me in my plans. I drove then all the way down to Kansas City to meet with Debbie and Scott. It was very important for me that they were a part of it and of course that they give me their blessings. During the next month I started planning and revealed also Claire's siblings and my parents my proposal idea too. I wanted to do special and unique things for Claire during my proposal because this is the way she makes me feel. The ring was crafted in Germany from a goldsmith few doors from where I grew up. "A piece of home". I tried to make the proposal a nice surprise but Claire can read me like an open book. She knew I was behaving weird. Of course! I never have been as nervous as on that day. I rented a house on the beach in Duluth where I told her we would spend a nice relaxing weekend. I took her out for a drink just to distract her for a bit and I ran back to arrange everything for the proposal. We took the way back over the back of the house, where a couple torches were lit up with view on the lake. To this moment she couldn't explain herself how I could have organized that without any help. I gave her the book with our memories and after the first page she started crying. I think this might be the moment where she knew what was happening. I kneeled down and asked her if she wants to marry me. But I had one big surprise left what even Claire didn't expect. After the Yes I waved towards the house and Debbie and Scott appeared. They made it all the way up to Duluth to join that unique moment. I will be always thankful for this effort and their help and preparation for the proposal. Claire's reaction was perfect and she couldn't believe it. We ended a perfect day with a perfect dinner in the heart of Duluth. -Hendrik

Die erste Person, die ich von meinen Plänen erzählte, war mein kleiner Bruder Julian. Er fühlte sich absolut genauso und unterstützte mich bei meinen Plänen. Ich bin dann den ganzen Weg runter nach Kansas City gefahren, um Debbie und Scott zu treffen. Es war sehr wichtig für mich, dass sie ein Teil davon sind und natürlich, dass sie mir ihren Segen geben. Während des nächsten Monats begann ich zu planen und enthüllte auch Claires Geschwister und meine Eltern meine Vorschlagsidee. Ich wollte während meines Vorschlags besondere und einzigartige Dinge für Claire tun, weil sie mich so fühlen lässt. Und der Ring: Ein Ring, der in Deutschland von einem Goldschmied hergestellt wurde, von dem aus ich aufgewachsen bin. "Ein Stück Heimat". Ich habe versucht, den Vorschlag zu einer schönen Überraschung zu machen, aber Claire kann mich wie ein offenes Buch lesen. Sie wusste, dass ich mich komisch benahm. Na sicher! Ich war noch nie so nervös wie an diesem Tag. Ich mietete ein Haus am Strand in Duluth, wo ich ihr sagte, wir würden ein schönes erholsames Wochenende verbringen. Ich nahm sie auf einen Drink mit, um sie ein wenig abzulenken, und rannte zurück, um alles für den Vorschlag zu arrangieren. Wir gingen über den Garten zurück, wo ein paar Fackeln mit Blick auf den See angezündet waren. Bis zu diesem Moment konnte sie sich nicht erklären, wie ich das ohne Hilfe hätte organisieren können. Ich gab ihr das Buch mit unseren Erinnerungen und nach der ersten Seite fing sie an zu weinen. Ich denke, dies könnte der Moment sein, in dem sie wusste, was geschah. Ich kniete nieder und fragte sie, ob sie mich heiraten will. Aber ich hatte eine große Überraschung übrig, mit der selbst Claire nicht gerechnet hatte. Nach dem Ja winkte ich zum Haus und Debbie und Scott erschienen. Sie haben es bis nach Duluth geschafft, sich diesem einzigartigen Moment anzuschließen. Ich werde für diese Bemühungen und ihre Hilfe und Vorbereitung für den Vorschlag immer dankbar sein. -Hendrik
