Conrad and Claire knew each other growing up having been raised in horse industry families and in similar social circles, but it wasn’t until after Conrad finished the Godolphin Flying Start program that they reconnected. One evening, after a glass or two of wine, Claire responded to a photo of a foal that Conrad had posted. Little did she know that her one reaction would set the wheels in motion in Conrad’s head. Their first date was at Corto Lima in Lexington; which went so well that they promptly scheduled their next date for coffee the next morning at Magee’s. As cliché as it sounds, it really was love at first sight. Both knew early on that their relationship had the potential to turn into partners for life, it was just a matter of time.
On a wet and dreary day in Lexington, Conrad hurriedly tried to get Claire out of the door so they could go pick up her twin sister, Hunter, to go to lunch in Paris and then out to Denali so Hunter could meet the Queen of Denali: Serena’s Song. Little did Claire know what he had in store for her. Serena was buddied up in a small paddock and when Claire, Hunter and Conrad arrived, one horse willingly came straight to the fence for pets and peppermints. To be clear, Serena’s Song stubbornly remained in the middle of the paddock refusing to come greet her guests despite the continuous encouragement of crinkling peppermint wrappers. Just as Conrad was about to enter the paddock to bring Serena to the fence, the old girl obliged and came to see what all the commotion was about. As she approached, Conrad asked Claire to check the halter and make sure that it was Serena. Claire shot Conrad a puzzled look as if to say: “well it is her, that is who we are here to see.” As she read the halter, Conrad got down on one knee and proposed as Claire noticed that the brass plate on the halter read: “Marry Me” with Hunter there to record the whole thing. Most importantly and as expected, Claire said yes!
