Howtown

Howtown is a picturesque village on the southern shores of Ullswater, nestled between the lake and the surrounding fells. It is approximately 15 minutes to drive from Pooley Bridge and around 25 minutes from Penrith.

Flight

Manchester / London

We’d recommend flying into Manchester and then taking a train or hiring a car from the airport. Another option is to fly into London, then take a train from Euston.

Train

Penrith

There is a direct train from London Euston to Penrith, which takes around three hours. From Manchester Airport, the direct train to Penrith takes just under two hours.

Rental Car

If you'd like to hire a car from Penrith, there is an Enterprise near the train station.

Travel Note

Driving in the Lakes

We recommend leaving with plenty of time to spare. There is a single lane into the Lakes, so any accidents or heavy traffic can lead to lengthy delays. This is particularly true on the road to Howtown, which is narrow in places and sometimes only wide enough for one vehicle at a time, so extra time to the church is strongly advised.
