Theresa and I are both firefighters in the same county, but for different departments. So we had no idea the other existed until the day we accidentally met. She picked up overtime randomly one day back in 2018, and it just so happened that my station had some fire training scheduled with her department that day. (Fun fact- this same drill had been scheduled for a day the previous week, but was canceled last minute. Theresa was not working the original day... so we would not have met). Anyway, when we got to the rescheduled drill, I hopped off the engine and saw 2 other crews in a semicircle chatting. I did my due diligence, going around the circle and shaking hands and immediately forgetting the names of every single new person I met. Well... everyone’s names except one. There was this really cute brunette named Theresa with super soft hands (only impression I could gather from a quick handshake, but I noticed). So we stood around for a few minutes as a group, the older guys chatting. As the new kid I stood silently on the outskirts kicking a little rock with my toe and stealing glances at this other girl, wondering if I should talk to her. I thought to myself: “Clair, you know nothing about her, but it’s rare to see another chick firefighter so what’s the harm in saying hi? Like for professional reasons....Yea....Professional....We’ll go with that....never mind she’s really pretty and fit and looks like a badass... Just say hi. And don’t be creepy. Go say something clever! She’ll like that. Okay.... clever. Cleverrrrrr hmm what should i say.... oh God your feet are already walking over there. Oh crap. WhaT SHOULD I SAY OH NO SHE SEES ME APPROACHING I HAVE TO SAY SOMETHING UHHH....” So. There I was. Standing slack jawed in front of this gorgeous woman, her staring at me, confused and annoyed, wondering what the hell this tall creeper wants. Then I dropped the best pickup line of the century. I mumbled “Um... It’s Theresa, right?” And now we’re getting married.
