There was once a princess who fell in love with a prince and they lived happily ever after. That's the short version anyway. We met 2 weeks before I started my freshman year in college at UC Santa Barbara. We started out as friends and actually had no initial feelings for each other. We grew closer as friends, but didn't think anything of it. When I moved to UCSB, Nick would come visit with a couple friends and we would hang out on campus. His visits started becoming more frequent and sometimes alone. I guess we didn't realize how suddenly we started to develop feelings for each other. He never formally asked me to be his girlfriend, but I noticed he would introduce me to people as such. The rest is history.
As much as I would love to tell a romantic story on how Nick proposed, truth is, we are as awkward as can be. For those of you that know us, we are the weirdest, most unconventional couple out there. So it really isn't a surprise that we have an awkward proposal story. We just hit our 11 years of being together and finally decided to move in together. The night we moved in, he was out Salsa dancing, while I stayed home moving in all my stuff. He got home pretty late and I was about to go to bed. I was in the bathroom removing my makeup when I hear him come home. He asks me to come outside because he has a surprise for me. My clueless self thought he brought home food for me. As soon as I go out to the kitchen and stood right in front of him, I saw him looking at the kitchen counter. I didn't have my contacts or glasses on so I stared at the counter longer than I should have when I realized it was a ring. I froze and didn't know what to do. So I just smiled. I looked back at him and said the most awkward thing to say in these situations, "Thank you." He gives me a weird look and then replies back, "What? Oh will you marry me?" Of course, I said yes.
