Chris and Nita both grew up at Covenant Church in Whitestone, New York. Although they spent their childhoods in the same circles, attending the same Sunday school classes, Chinese school, and youth group, they rarely interacted. For Nita, everything changed in the summer of 2016, when she and Chris co-led a class for the church’s Vacation Bible School. That week, Chris’ older brother Stephen jokingly “shipped” them by taping a sign that read “Chris ❤︎ Nita” onto their backs. It was then that Nita first became drawn to Chris' easygoing personality and gentle patience. Chris, on the other hand, remained oblivious. For the next seven years, their paths continued to cross, but college life kept them busy: Nita focused on getting into medical school, and Chris on playing basketball. It wasn’t until 2021, when Nita moved back to the area to begin medical school, that they became part of the same cell group and started serving together in their church's youth group. They grew to know each other as friends. In May 2022, after the church’s Memorial Day weekend picnic, they had their first-ever one-on-one conversation over text. Their discussion lasted for hours, covering everything from church ministry to online dating. Over the next year and a half, more interactions happened sporadically. During one such conversation, for reasons still unclear, Nita told Chris she didn’t want to date anyone from church, so Chris quietly removed the possibility from consideration. But in October 2023, with a little encouragement from their cell group, Chris and Nita went out for coffee after Sunday service. They shared their sides of the story from beginning to end and discovered that although they had known each other all their lives, God's timing for them had been perfect. Despite the uncertainty of Nita’s residency match and Chris’ NBA career, they are amazed by how God has faithfully led them through each step leading to this moment. They look forward to His plan as they begin a new chapter together.
