Our Love Story (Chicago Food Scene Reviewed)

We fell in love in Chicago, a city as renowned for its food as for its cold winters. In fact, food is a major through line in our relationship - from Chris' avocado toast and zuppa toscana, to the many restaurants we've visited, to countless episodes of The Bear and Top Chef. It's only fitting that we tell our love story by rating some of Chicago's top bars and restaurants. The Sparrow: Bar where it all started. Our first Hinge date. Where Chris took many women on first dates. MANY women. Good vibe, but they did away with Chris' favorite martini. 3/5 stars. Antique Taco: Dinner on our second date. Food was fine, but we stole their cute yellow cups as keepsakes, so we'll be generous. 3/5 stars. Beatrix (River North): Chloe tried to take control of planning a date, but she was new to the city and Chris can be (is) incredibly particular when it comes to dining, so this was their compromise. 3/5 stars. The Loyalist: Chris and Chloe went here on their fifth date before going to the Sauced Night Market. Still Chloe's favorite burger in the city - she won't hear otherwise. 5/5 stars. Bocadillo Market: This is where Chloe thought Chris was going to break up with her a couple months into dating, but really, he just wanted brunch. 1/5 stars. Mi Tocaya Antojería: A few months after they met, Chloe sped down from work in the suburbs to meet Chris for 30 minutes at this restaurant before he left for 10 days in Italy. She really wanted to see him before he left, even for a short time. 4/5 stars. Table, Donkey, Stick: The first Christmas we dated, Chris got Chloe a present, Chloe didn't get him one. He'll never let her forget it. Oh, this is where we went to dinner the night he gave her the present (chocolates). 3/5 stars. Obelix: First birthday together! Chloe took Chris here and this is where we took our first picture. Baked Alaska was chef's kiss. 5/5 stars. Moody Tongue: Can only rate the chocolate cake, but this is where Chris surprised Chloe by taking her to eat after she broke two hours in the half-marathon. He created a beautiful charcuterie board and took her to Moody Tongue to get their 10-layer chocolate cake. He didn't give her this treatment the second year she ran the half because she was "already properly wooed." Still, 5/5 stars. Gibson's Bar & Steakhouse: After which Chris finally told Chloe he loved her. 5/5 stars. Avec River North/West Loop: Oft-visited restaurants. First Easter brunch in River North, second Easter brunch in West Loop. Both 5/5 stars. Tortello's: Our first summer together, Chris took Chloe exploring around different Chicago neighborhoods. On one of these days, we explored Wicker Park and ended up sitting outside at Tortello's, sipping wine, munching on bread, and inhaling pasta (ok, Chloe inhaled it). Chris surprised Chloe by getting her a chocolate dessert, because he knows his girl. A banner day. 5/5 stars. Maple and Ash: So, we've never actually dined there but Chris used to live across the street from the restaurant and it was sooooo loud. The revving engines, the honking Ubers. 0/5 stars. Maman Zari: Where Chris took Chloe to her first tasting menu! The night she officially drank the Kool Aid and became a pretentious food snob like her betrothed. 5/5 stars. Rose Mary: Chloe's favorite spot in the city. The first time she and Chris dined there, they sat at the kitchen. It was like watching The Bear IRL. Priscilla, Jack, Jeremy, Chris, and Chloe also went there for Chloe's birthday, only a few days before the surprise engagement. 5/5 stars. Sappori Trattori: The Pope-Levisons and Toureks went here the night Chris and Chloe got engaged. Adorable Italian spot with excellent pasta and tiramisu. 5/5 stars. Oriole: Chris took Chloe here to celebrate their engagement. Food, service, wine, ambiance, company, all impeccable. Duke beat #1 Houston in the Sweet 16. Perfect evening. 5/5 stars.

For all the days along the way
