In late December of 2014, Matthew, who had just gotten a fresh haircut and was feeling lucky, made a plan. With his best friend Karla in tow, he set out to Hillcrest Brewing Company to find a hot date. Some kind of magic must have been in the air that night because Matthew – who did not like beer – found himself drinking (and actually enjoying) a Long and Stout, HBC's signature Russian Imperial stout. Scanning the brewery that night, there wasn't much that captured his fancy—except for one server with an outstanding beard and well-fitting jeans. Fortified by the 11% ABV beverage in hand, Matthew queried his own server about the brunette he kept making eyes with. "What's his story?" "Girl, he already noticed you and thinks you're cute." That was all he needed. Steeling himself, Matthew stood up from his bar stool, pointed himself in the bearded brunette's direction, and started marching with purpose. He marched... right past Christopher and into the bathroom. "Lost my nerve," he admitted to Karla after pretending to pee and skulking back to his seat. For Matthew, the written word had always come more naturally than the spoken one, so he decided to lean in. As the evening drew to a close, he grabbed his receipt, crafted what he hoped would be an irresistible invitation, and left the rest to fate and the whims of his own server, who he asked to deliver the scrawled affections to the bearded server across the room. On December 22, just a few days later, Christopher and Matthew had their first date at a wine bar to which they never returned and is now a Crossfit gym. But their journey together has continued ever since. A month in, Christopher asked Matthew to be his boyfriend. A few months after that, they moved in together. At six months, Matthew said those three little words. And at almost four years, Chris stood on a stage in Albuquerque, knees knocking, and proposed. Which brings us to here. We can't wait to share this special day with you.
