How We Met!

Christine and Dan first met while working for Spring Lake Park School District. Imagine if you will… … a sunny fall day. The birds were chirping, the grass was growing, and some other stuff was probably going on somewhere. But it was mostly the grass and birds. Dan (Mr. Mueller to the students) was sitting in his cheap, broken down office chair, held together by duct tape and exactly three pieces of gum, watching his students begin their morning play time. It had been a fine morning of learning. Mighty fine. They had worked on learning the alphabet, practiced their sign language, endeavored to write their names, raised hands, asked questions, and picked noses, with some mild calisthenics mixed in for good measure. Out of the corner of his eye he caught sight of the program manager in the hallway with, what he assumed was, another parent touring the site to see if it would be a “good fit” for their little, perfect, cherub. In practice it was nearly always a “good fit” given the programs low cost and its connection with a public school. Christine (Ms. Christine to the students) looked back and forth between the open classroom door and the program manager as he spoke. She was filled with anticipation with a small side of trepidation. She had interviewed for this job forever plus two days ago. Since then she had been stuck in bureaucratic limbo as Human Resources “processed” and “checked” certain things about her application. She was certain that her job offer was on top of a big pile of important papers, with a single un-important paper carelessly placed on top, dooming the hole pile to obscurity.

How We Met Continued

The program manager had been telling Christine all about the site and what each room was as they walked down the hall. As they reached the end of the hallway they stood before an open door with the name ‘Mr. Mueller’ printed next to it. The manager mentioned a few things about the room. How big the class was, how the classroom strangely had two doors, and how none of the staff expected her to dress like Mr. Mueller did. The last item caught her by surprise. Peering into the room she noticed that the teacher was indeed wearing dress slacks with a shirt and tie. And they appeared to actually match! Dan watched as the program manager and Christine entered the room. “Alright,” Dan thought, “someone with questions that won’t involved needing to use the bathroom today!” With some gesturing and a “few” too many words Dan and Christine were introduced to one another. Christine remembers her first instructions from the handsome, debonair, and (mostly) not at all smelly teacher on her first day. “Keep the tiny people alive.” More sagely words never were before spoken in the field of education. Christine would remember them always. Dan remembered that for nearly the first month that Christine work with him he would refer to her as ‘Ms. Kristin,’ and not infrequently. To this day he steadfastly clings to the notion that it was not his fault because neither Christine nor his other assistant ever corrected him. Although she did wear a name tag every moment she was at work… From that moment on… some shit happened, blah-blah-blah. They dated, something-something…just come to their wedding alright!! The End
