Assisi is famous for being the birthplace of St. Francis, and holds the Basilica of St. Francis, the mother church of the Franciscan Order and burial place of St. Francis. Assisi is also great for local bites at sandwich shops, shopping, and historic site seeing.
Perugia is the charming historic capital of Umbria. It has one of Italy's best-preserved medieval centers, with ancient Etruscan walls, narrow cobblestone streets, Gothic palaces, and impressive architecture. If visiting we recommend dining at Luce Ristorante for an elegant experience or a glass of wine and small bite at La Fame for a more relaxed, rustic feel.
Montefelco is another historic town enclosed in medieval walls in the region of Umbria. Montefelco is know for its panoramic views over the Umbrian Valley, and for its Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso Wines. Greg, Ally and I had the pleasure of eating at Enoteca L'Alchimista, which may now be one of our favorite meals we've had in Europe. Check it out for lunch or dinner paired with great sips if you have time!
Often called one of the most beautiful villages in the country. Spello sits between Assisi (about 10-15 minutes away) and Foligno. This pink-stoned gem offers breathtaking views over the Umbrian valley. With ancient Roman roots, Spello features well-preserved Roman gates (Porta Venere and Porta Consolare), traces of walls, an amphitheater, and charming medieval streets. Spend some time tasting and shopping for wine at Enoteca Properzio.
