Our (Last) First Date

October 18th, 2020

Josh rushed out of work, still in his work clothes, and picked Chrissy up in his sweet chariot (a 2008 Ford Focus with a dented door & missing rearview mirror). He may have been living on a $12 an hour salary, but that didn't steer him from ordering 2 dozen oysters and dirty martinis at Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar. That night, the two kept finding things to do to make the date last longer. Chrissy knew this wouldn't be their last date the second he started singing along with her on the ride home. Josh had been asking Chrissy for this date for months, so he wanted it to be perfect. It was. Chrissy didn't know it at the time, but this date meant he had to eat cans of beans and turkey bacon with ketchup for the next week. This first date may have gone a little too perfectly.....because that remained his diet for the next few months. To this day, he confirms all the beans were worth it.

The Proposal

June 25th, 2022

An anxiety-filled proposal for the ages. Josh had been planning to ask Chrissy to marry him for quite some time. Since they were in the midst of closing on their first home, Chrissy was continuously pulling both of their bank statements to send to the mortgage lender. This made it really difficult for Josh to save for the ring without her catching on. Every day that passed felt like a risk. A close friend became Josh's personal money launderer. Each week, Josh would withdraw extra cash from Stop & Shop and pass it along for him to hold on to. After finally getting enough money out of his account to afford the ring, it was time to pick it up. Once in hand, Josh promised himself that he would save that special moment for the day they closed on their home. Nerves said otherwise. As soon as he got the ring in his pocket, he began to sweat and have a slight panic attack (it was a full-blown panic attack). Rather than drive home and hide the ring, he drove directly to find her father and ask him for permission. Jon was golfing with Mark Perkins. Picture this: You're drinking with your friend on the 12th hole in the middle of nowhere when you hear your name being yelled in the distance, and it's your future son-in-law sprinting at you in a grass-stained shirt and tie (he fell while running). Josh will never forget the fear on Jon's face. For that split second, he probably thought something really terrible had happened. In the middle of wheezing, Josh got out the words, "Can I marry your daughter?" Josh was so relieved to hear "Yes," but started panicking yet again when he realized he couldn't keep this secret for long. Weeks prior to the proposal, Chrissy was telling Josh she was not materialistic and would accept a piece of bologna on her finger. As he raced home, he kept thinking to himself "I'm going to do this" and he seemed confident as ever. The confidence went right down the drain as he opened the door to their apartment. Chrissy was in her pajamas on the phone with USAA trying to figure out homeowners insurance. The first words out of her mouth were: "Why do you look like that? Are you okay? Did you hit a dog in the neighborhood?" Josh, unable to stop himself, was smiling and laughing hysterically. He finally sputtered, "I have good news and bad news, Stop & Shop didn't have any bologna left." Obviously, Chrissy never asked him to get bologna. He began wrestling with his back pocket. He was struggling desperately to get the ring box out with beads of sweat pouring down his face. His palms were sweaty, knees weak, arms were heavy There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready. "But they did have this," he said as he showed her the ring. Josh was a great salesman, but that was his toughest sell to date. The 15-minute drive home from the golf course didn't allow much time to practice his line, but it was perfect. And they will live happily ever after. A note from the couple: We're so excited to celebrate this next chapter in our lives with you all. See you in June!
