How We Met

Zac: Go ahead, Chris. Tell the story. Chris: I don’t think so. I always have to tell this story. Why don’t you tell it this time?! Zac: But you tell it much better than I do. Chris: [sits silently and stares at Zac] Zac: It was a dark and gloomy night… Chris: NO! I had been in Las Vegas for a work conference. The conference lasted all week so by Friday, I was leaving and on my way back to OC. I was riding in the back seat of a co-worker's car and bored out of my head. I decided to login to a location-based dating app to see who was nearby and to see if there was anyone with whom I could chat. I was near Barstow so I knew I’d never see this person or chat with them again but it was at least better than staring out at the endless desert landscape. Zac: Little did he know… Chris: Stop. Zac: Okay, okay. It was a Friday and my friends and I had decided to head to Vegas for a little overdue partying. I was driving, which meant I “had to pay attention to the road”. I was curious as to who may be in the area and decided to hop on the dating app as well. Since I was driving there wasn’t much I could do with regard to chatting. Chris: Then why were you on the app?!? Zac: Don’t judge me...desert landscape...bored...just, go on.

[Chris rolls eyes]

Chris: As I said previously, this was a location-based app so the app only pulls up the nearest people around you and maxes out at a certain number of profiles. When a user is in a more populated area, the distance of profiles the user sees is a lot smaller. Back at home, my range was about 10 miles...out in Barstow, it was about 250 miles. Back in the car, I logged in and among the list of people, I noticed Zac’s profile. It didn’t say where he was from or where he might be going. I just assumed that he may be living in the area so a short chat wouldn't hurt anyone. We exchanged a few messages here and there. Later, we figured out that I was coming home from Vegas and he was on his way to Vegas. We also found out that we lived only 11 miles away from each other (Orange and Buena Park)! Zac: I asked him for his phone number so we could text each other and told him I wouldn’t be on the app all that much since I’d be with my friends all weekend. Chris: A few weeks later we finally decided to hang out. Shortly after meeting in person, we couldn’t help but want to spend more and more time together. About a month later, I asked him to be my boyfriend...and we have been together ever since. What’s truly serendipitous about the whole thing was when we were home in OC, we were just outside each others’ range on the app so we were never able to see each other. It took us traveling to the middle of nowhere (Barstow) to find each other! Zac: Aren’t you lucky?!? Chris: Yeah, I know I am! Truly! Zac: Also, do you think people read this in our voices?!
