KAILUA, HAWAII -- On a warm, sunny Sunday in January 2016, Chris limped his BMW – a red beater that leaked a quart of oil per day -- up to Merra's house on the windward coast of Oahu. “Nice car,” Merra said, kicking things off. “Yea, it’s…fun.” Chris fumbled. “The convertible top still works – sometimes.” It was a tough choice, but the two settled on fine dining at the local Whole Foods, famous for its $5 “pint and slice" deal. Chris generously ponied up for a second beer, which brought the tab on that memorable, conversation-filled first date to a manageable $16.75. These two lovebirds were having fun. So much so, in fact, that they decided to catch a late screening of Leo DiCaprio’s new romantic film, The Revenant. That gruesome mauling bear scene may have slowed the consumption of popcorn, but it wasn’t enough to ruin the night. Date 2 would be right around the corner. After four years, four jobs, dozens of concerts, thousands of cycling and hiking miles, a new city and a dog, Merra and Chris still find plenty of time for pizza and brews.
