One of your "must" first stops upon your arrival, to get an educational overview of Martha's Vineyard, should be The Carnegie at 58 N. Water Street, owned by The Vineyard Trust. This architectural landmark was given as a gift to Edgartown by Andrew Carnegie back in the early 1900s to be used as a public library. Today, renovated and restored, it serves as an island heritage center illustrating the historical development of Martha's Vineyard through various exhibits showcasing, among other aspects, the island's rich whaling, fishing, and agricultural history, as well as it unique, cultural diversity. The Carnegie also offers walking tours exploring the maritime and architectural history of Edgartown through stops along the waterfront and at several of the Vineyard Trust's historic buildings. Come journey from the days of whaling and commerce, to the rise of the now resort community and the unparalleled leisure activities Edgartown and the island as a whole offer.
