We met as first year graduate students in Physics at the University of Chicago. Our friendship was immediate, bonding over new experiences, stress, friends, anxiety, brunches, happy hours, and a common sense of "what in the world is this professor saying". By the Christmas break of our first year the connection had already been made, and over those two weeks apart we made plans for our first date in the new year.
Though the proposal was a poorly held secret, it was perhaps Dan's newfound desire to buy a "proper camera" that should have tipped Tracy off. On a beautiful Autumn day in October of 2022 we grabbed brunch at our local favorite, and drove to the suburbs in search for trees amongst the concrete jungle of Chicago. That day the Morton Arboretum was holding a beer and cider festival. After enjoying the event, we went for hike to the Arboretum's "Big Rock" attraction. There, Dan clumsily setup his new camera for a totally inconspicuous round of photos, before proposing to the not-so-surprised Tracy. Though the potential for puns arising from proposing with a big rock at the Big Rock was not lost on Dan, the location also held sentimental value to us. The Arboretum gave us respite during the darkest days of the pandemic, and symbolized the enduring strength of our relationship.
