How We Met

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

We met in college while both pursuing our Bachelor's of Science degrees in Biology at Holy Names University (HNU) in Oakland, California.

Henry's Perspective

It was my junior year and I had signed up for 18 units which turned out to be my most challenging academic semester. I had classes between 8am - 5pm everyday and even had a night class at 9pm - 10:15pm on Fridays. I was also working grave yard shift Friday/Saturday nights with tutoring on the side. My first class of the academic year was Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy. I arrived on time to class for once and sat in the front row. The professor was starting off the new year with introductions of the class, starting with herself, and gave us instructions to find a partner to introduce to the class. After she finished her introduction, two girls walked into class late and they sat in the row behind me. I heard the girl behind me say to her friend that they were going to introduce each other but the professor instructed those in my row to pair up with the row behind us so I turned around and introduced myself to my partner. Her name was Chloe. After my lunch break, I was running late to my Molecular Biology Lab. When I arrived, I saw that all of the lab stations were taken and there were no open seats. Each student is assigned a designated lab station to use for the semester so I was out of luck. The professor instructed me to pull a chair and pointed at the already occupied lab station in the back corner. I noticed that the person occupying that lab station was the same girl I met in my first class. Seeing that I had already met her, I thought it wouldn't be an issue sharing her lab station with me. It didn't turn out that way... I could tell that she was not too happy. She told me to not mess up her lab station and that I was going to do as she says. So throughout the semester, she would tell me step by step instructions on what to do for each lab experiment, so I had the luxury of never needing to read the pre-lab assignments. It turned out to be a pretty good partnership...

Chloe's Point of View

I was a Super Senior- I missed walking and graduating with my class by 1 unit. It was the first day of my last semester and I wasn't too happy to be there. My friend and I had the same first class so we decided to show up late to our Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy class to avoid the first day introductions. My friend and I walked into class about 15 minutes late and I took a seat in the second row. Unfortunately, we were not late enough and walked in when introductions were starting. I looked at my friend and said we'll just be partners for introductions since we already know each other. The professor heard me and decided to pair the first and second rows. Next thing I saw, was this guy sitting in front of me turn around with the biggest googly eyes and a huge smile. I thought to myself, "ugh, this guy is gonna like me." At the end of class, I asked my friend if she knew of the person I introduced. She told me that she had a few classes with him before and it's weird I've never met him. After that first class, I had a break before my Molecular Biology Lab. I decided to take a short lunch and set up my lab station early. I had that same lab station every year while attending HNU and everyone in my year knew that was my work bench. Lab started and students were filling in and setting up their lab stations while I was already relaxing. Fifteen minutes into the lab, that same guy I introduced earlier walks in and there were no available lab stations so I figured he was in the wrong class. Instead, the professor points in my direction and tells him to pull up a chair and share my lab station. I, again thought to myself, "are you kidding me!? I came to lab to set up early and now I have to share." I was really upset and decided that he was not going to mess up my lab station so I led and supervised the experiments while he did all the dirty work. I taught him everything he knows!
