The place where Matt popped the question! Visit this quaint, historic fishing village on the Leland Harbor. Check out the local shops that now occupy the old shanties and have lunch or a drink on the water at Rick's Cafe. Fishing is permitted along the docks, of course! You may also see some fisherman bringing in their daily catch.
Just up the hill from Fishtown, walk along Leland's main street to see more local shops and restaurants. Visit the Mercantile for any grocery items you may need. The Bluebird and The Cove are great casual restaurants, and the Riverside Inn has an upscale menu and beautiful deck seating by the Leland River.
At Crystal River, you can rent bikes to take on the Sleeping Bear Trail and kayaks to paddle down the beautiful, shallow river behind it. For the paddle, staff will drop you and your group up river, and from there you will kayak back to town. The trip takes around two hours if you have kayaking experience. The water is "crystal" clear and extremely shallow, reaching only about 2-3 feet deep on average. The bike path spans through the trees, past Glen Haven Beach and the Sleeping Bear Dunes.
M22 is the highway you will likely travel around the Leelanau Peninsula. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful roads in the state and has become an important icon for both those who live in the area and those who vacation to it. This store sells all things M22 and also features a new outdoor wine bar.
