Travel Note
Salt Spring can be a little tricky to get around—as a semi-rural setting, it doesn’t have a reliable transit system or cab service. Please bring your vehicle, rent one, or carpool with friends you know are invited! You can also reach out to us if you need to be put in contact with folks for carpooling purposes. Cellular reception can also be spotty on the island, so make sure before you leave to download the offline map of Salt Spring from Google Maps (or your navigational app of choice!) The Island is accessible by ferry or float plane. We recommend staying at least two nights and three days, from the 24th to 26th, to ensure that you get to take in the best parts of this beautiful island in peak summer season, and to avoid feeling rushed with your travelling! There are many AirBnB options available, and splitting with friends will make this more affordable if that is a concern. We’ve also linked a few hotels below, though there are several others not listed that are out there as well! We recommend booking your stays ASAP, as similar to the ferries the summer season has hotels booked out even a year in advance! Taking the Ferry: The only way to bring your own car to the island is to take BC Ferries. Book your ferry reservation at LEAST two months in advance, as Salt Spring is a very popular tourist spot in the summer and sailings fill up MUCH faster than you’d think! Sailings from Vancouver are about 1.5 hours long for the direct route, or 3 hours for the ‘milk-run’ route that stops at other gulf islands along the way.
Flight
Scenic flights on small float planes can take you from Victoria or Vancouver to Salt Spring Island in less than 45 minutes! A very fast way to get to the island, and a wonderful option if you plan to rent a car once you arrive, or meet up with someone who is bringing their car on the ferry and has extra room.
