The beginning of forever

New Year’s Day, 2023. It started like any other family lunch, warm, noisy, full of food and laughter. But then he showed up. No one had invited him, and honestly, I still don’t know why he came. He didn’t formally meet the family, but curiosity buzzed across the table. Who was this random guy chatting with my brother-in-law and effortlessly playing with the kids? I only knew him as Suwi’s friend, and that’s exactly how I introduced him. The day didn’t end there. A few of us, including him, headed to a spot called Rooftop. There, I watched from the sidelines as he and my sister danced like they’d known each other forever, matching each other’s amapiano steps with a rhythm that was almost… cosmic. Not really my vibe, so I just sipped my drink and observed. Something was shifting, and I felt it. Fast forward to 27th January, 2023. A text from my sister lit up my phone: “I think I’ve found a dude. Lawyer/Farmer. 35. He’s so funny.” From there, it was like the universe had chosen a new soundtrack for her life, and it was all Chipo. Every visit, every lunch, every phone call… somehow the conversation always circled back to him. We could be talking about cheese sticks, and boom—Chipo. So I asked, “Where did you even meet this guy?” Apparently, it all kicked off when they dropped off a birthday gift for his son. And from that moment, vibes. By 25th July, the gifts weren’t just from a friend anymore. Thoughtful, cute, personal. The kind of gifts that don’t say “I like you," they scream “I see you.” “He gets me. We never run out of things to talk about. I think this might go somewhere. He’s so serious with me.” And serious he was. I remember one random weekday lunch with the two of them. The banter started over who was paying the bill; he paid last time, and she was insisting it was him to pay again. Not that he couldn’t pay, he didn’t mind paying at all. It was just playful back-and-forth, but she ended up paying that time. Honestly? Didn’t affect me. I had free food. But you know what really sold me? The ring. He took us to a jewellery store that made my jaw drop. I barely contributed to the conversation—sizes, colours, cuts? I was lost. But not him. Chipo knew exactly what he wanted from the moment we walked in. He didn’t even let the jeweller finish a sentence. A focused man, I told my best friend later. She said, “That’s a man who knows he’s found his person.” And now, here I stand, watching these two souls, these two friends, lovers, and now partners, step into their future. I pray their dreams stretch wide and bloom fully. I hope laughter stays at the heart of their home. And above all, I’m so grateful to have had a front-row seat to this love story. Because I wasn’t just a witness… I was there from day one—well, maybe day seven—but that’s not the point. Not just as a guest. Not just as a friend. I’m Georgina Mwale. Sister to the bride. Maid of Honor. And now, proud Sister in Love. Oh, and I found out later that he actually was invited to that New Year’s family lunch. By his love. The same woman he was sure, even back then, he was going to marry.
