Our Engagement Story

Sometimes the best things are unplanned

It was the very first day of our 20–day road trip across the western national parks, starting in Utah. We had been planning this trip for months — and tucked into those plans was the biggest surprise of all: Chey asking Ash to marry her. Chey had secretly hired a photographer, Tyler, from Instagram. He helped pick the perfect spot and even created a fake “guided hike” email so Ash wouldn’t suspect a thing. The plan was to dress up, go to a farm-to-table restaurant across the Arizona border called Black Sage for dinner, and then head out on our “hike.” We got ready at our Airbnb in Cane Beds, AZ, and loaded up the car. But on the drive, we realized Arizona and Utah were an hour apart, and suddenly the careful timing unraveled — dinner was impossible if we were going to make our “hike” on time. So, instead of a romantic meal, we laughed and settled for a gas station charcuterie board, fountain sodas, and even a little Titos vodka mixed in for good measure. It wasn’t fancy, but it was us — and it felt perfect. When we finally met Tyler, the skies opened up in a torrential downpour. He had us wait in the car, but when the rain wouldn’t stop, he suggested another spot about 30 minutes away. We decided to trust him. We followed him into the Zion Mountains until we reached a quiet neighborhood, where the skies had cleared. Still dressed up but slipping into hiking shoes, we followed him up to a place called Lizard Rock. Tyler asked if he could get some drone footage, and while Ash walked ahead for a photo. Chey secretly tucked the ring into her waistband. When the moment was right, she got down on one knee. And then — the most surprising twist of all — Ash pulled a ring out of her pocket, too. We had both been planning to propose to each other. It wasn’t the fancy dinner, the perfect weather, or even the original plan that made it unforgettable. It was every twist, every laugh, and that unbelievable moment where we both asked the same question at the same time: Will you marry me?
