Just as quick as he was to deny, Devyn was in the room changing into boardshorts. As they stepped outside towards the courtyard, a little voice cried out behind: “I wanna go swimming too!”. Riley had observed the idea and wanted in, unaware of the intimate and life changing situation unfolding. Devyn tried as hard to be kind without blowing the news, until finally he closed the gate and barked “No Riley!”. In tears, she retreated crying out for her grandparents, and cursing his name. Cries behind him, he made way towards the pool where chey was standing, rethinking her decision to jump in. Assuming there was a step, he aimed a foot toward the water only to find nothing but his body tumbling against concrete into the icy waters. Bleeding, laughing, and cold, he splashed water out to chey till finally she jumped it. Two minutes in the cold water was enough, as she scrambled out the water towards the towels he reached out. Grabbing her, he pulled themselves out of darkness towards little lights bordering the ground. In his hand he hid the little blue box he had thrown out before falling in the pool. Completely silent, he dropped to a knee under the rain and extended his arm. Her hands covered her face as she laughed and cried out “Yes! Yes!”. Just for a second though she paused and said “You have to say it though”. He had been silent the whole time, so frozen in the moment that he had forgotten to speak.
