It was a beautiful Wednesday in Columbus in early May, one of those truly perfect “winter is officially over” days. Matt was heading to the grocery store to purchase flowers for an early Mother’s Day dinner. It just so happened that Chelsea was there to do the same for her sister, Hollie, and her friend, Anna. Noticing the pretty girl also perusing the flower section, Matt walked over and suavely asked, “Is it just me, or are all these flower options bad?” Dazzled by Matt’s charm, Chelsea replied, “I agree, they really are slacking on the selection.” Sparks flew, but they both had to part ways quickly for destinations, at that time, unknown to each other. Matt headed to meet his parents for dinner in Grandview, while Chelsea went off to a workout class and dinner with her friend, Halle. Chelsea finished her workout, but the destination for dinner and drinks was still undecided. A typically inconsequential decision between Grandview Café and High Bank would, in that moment, have major implications. Which of the ladies chose the destination has been lost to time, but a case can be made for fate. The ladies met at Grandview Café to catch up on their recent Eras Tour experiences. Meanwhile, at an establishment not so far away: While having a pre-dinner drink with his parents at Grandview Theater and kicking himself for not getting the number of the girl from the grocery store, Matt bumped into his friend Hailey Vonderahe during a run. Matt agreed to let Hailey and her husband, Charlie, know when dinner had concluded to see if post-dinner drinks were in order (as if this was ever in question). Matt and his parents had a lovely time at La Tavola, but his parents decided to head back to Canton that evening. Matt quickly pivoted and went to the Vonderahes’ household. They decided to walk next door to Knotty Pine. Usually reserved and unopinionated, Matt surprised everyone by insisting they needed a “patio vibe” to take advantage of the night and pushed for a change in location. They agreed, and Grandview Café was chosen as the next stop. Hailey and Charlie were the first to arrive on the back patio and selected three seats at the corner of the bar. Matt, following behind, was pleasantly surprised to see the pretty girl from the grocery store in the chair next to Hailey. Both recognizing one another from the store two hours earlier, tried to play it cool with a smile and wave. At that moment, Hailey and Halle bombarded each of their friends with enthusiastic questions about who this mystery person was. Calming down, both parties enjoyed drinks, separately together. Matt, planning to ask for Chelsea’s number as they were leaving, had his plan altered when Hailey asked if the rosé the two ladies were drinking was any good. They gave it their stamp of approval, and Charlie quickly ordered a bottle of Seaglass rosé (high-end stuff, don’t fact-check that) and invited them to stay for one more drink. Spoiler: Matt got Chelsea’s number. One more drink turned into another bottle, which rolled into a night of joking and laughter, which quickly became staying out too late on a school night, all of this resulted in a first date, then a few more dates, then love, and finally brought us all together to celebrate!
