In the summer of 2014, Charlie was a young buck trying to make a name for himself at Phillips 66. He hoped to use his charm, wit, and confidence to land a date with his then "boss", Katlyn Lopus. He would constantly make excuses to see her, whether it was a question on how to pull data or to gossip about stuff that Katlyn wasn't allowed to tell Charlie. There were sparks -- or at least he thought so -- but Charlie had to return to school when the summer ended. He yearned to see Katlyn again, so he accepted an offer from Phillips 66. Sadly, the exact same week Charlie moved to Houston, Katlyn moved to Detroit. Their friendship grew over the next several years as the two went recruiting together and had hour-long conversations about how much they "loved" working in a plant. The stars realigned in early 2018 when the couple found themselves both back in Houston! So Charlie devised a plan to finally win over the woman he had always been dreaming of. And eventually, he knocked her off her feet.
The first vacation we ever took together was to Big Bend National Park in Texas. We set off on a multi-day road trip that would truely test the strength of our relationship. We dubbed this trip the #makeit trip because it would either make us or break us. Well, we guess it made us because since then we have visited 12 national parks and Katlyn has knocked off all of her 50 states.
Katlyn has been on a mission to visit all 50 states -- and Hawaii was the last on her list. So the day Southwest Airlines started offering flights to Hawaii, she and Charlie bought their tickets. In the several months leading up to the trip, Katlyn was dropping hints, trying to figure out if Charlie was going to ask the big question. Charlie was ready, but he still didn't want to ruin the surprise. On the day they arrived in Honolulu, Charlie planned to propose to Katlyn on the beach. Wanting to look good for the occasion, Charlie decided to dress in an all-linen ensemble. Katlyn, confused by Charlie's choice of sweat-inducing clothing, made fun of him incessantly as they traveled to the beach. As they arrived, Charlie slung his camera case (where the ring was hidden) over his shoulder. Katlyn joked that Charlie looked like a classic mainland tourist twice his actual age. With bigger things on his mind, Charlie led Katlyn to the shore until she saw a heart made of flowers in the sand. She wondered who the gesture was for and tried to keep her distance. Yet Charlie insisted that they move closer to take "a quick picture." Finally in place, Charlie asked Katlyn to marry him -- and she said YES!
Lord, as Katlyn and Charlie prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage, we come together in prayer to ask that all Your special blessings be bestowed upon them. Guide them to know Your will. May they look to Your love for them as their model of how they are to love each other. Show them how to nourish and cherish each other as they would their own bodies. Bring Your strengths to their weaknesses so that they might help each other grow into the people You created them to be. Their parents have prayed for years that Katlyn and Charlie would find that special person that would complete them and are overjoyed at the union that they are now forming. Enable them to grow in their intimacy with You and with each other so that they might experience the fullness of Your love. Through Your model of marriage with Christ and His church, allow them to more fully understand Your love for them. We ask You to be with them during these final weeks and days before their exchange of vows. Amen.
