It was love at first splash when Susie and Charles met at a birthday party. Charles had flung a water balloon filled with pizzazz and swagger at Susie which immediately caught her attention. Bashful glances turned into interested gazes that night. They had already lived 14 and 15 years of life, so clearly, they knew what they were doing. Little did they know that this water balloon would ironically turn into the spark for their relationship. After Susie figured out Charles’ articulate and suave AIM (AOL Instant Messenger - for you young folk) screen name, OMGissChar1z, the next 6 months were filled with flirtatious “away” messages, shout-outs on profile pages, and playful exchanges. They would get excited when a “creaking door” sound played to signal the other had signed on, and would become sad when a “door slammed shut” signaled the end of the night’s conversation. Little could get in the way of these sparks turning into flames, aside from dial-up Internet, their siblings kicking them off to use the only computer in the house, or their $.10 per minute phone plans which forced them to only talk past 9PM. One day, when Charles became ill, Susie went over to take care of him. It was then that Charles realized all he’d ever need to feel better was her contagious laugh and goofy personality. Despite having unwashed hair, being febrile, and having a snot-filled face, Charles asked Susie to be his girlfriend, and thus, the flames were set ablaze. The following 18 years were filled with many highs but these did not come without the challenges of many lows. Charles and Susie would not have had it any other way, and could not have made it without the loving support or family, friends, and fur babies who stayed by their sides. Some would say they have been inseparable throughout their chapters so far which earned them the nickname, “CharSue bun” (cha siu bao). Now, they are ready for the next chapter of their lives as husband and wife, and are so happy that you are a part of it!
