Colombia has become a popular travel destination in recent years, and many areas, including Bogotá and Suesca, are safe for visitors, especially if you take normal travel precautions. However, we do have a few tips for our gringo friends. 1. Safety & Awareness > Use ride-hailing apps like Uber instead of hailing taxis on the street. Please do not use public transport. > Be mindful of your belongings—pickpocketing is very big in Colombia, especially the stealing of mobile phones. Try and use them as little as possible in public. If you do get put in a difficult situation, just hand over your belongings, it isn't worth the fight. > Avoid flashing valuables like jewellery or watches. Guys, if it's AP, Rolex, Cartier, or even a "Shenzen special" - please don't bring them to Colombia. You will already stick out, don't become a walking target. > To our single male friends attending, please avoid the dating apps and take precaution with the beautiful Colombian women. Dating scams are prevalent in the country. > Smaller towns like Suesca are quiet and usually safe(r). Our wedding venue is gated and has security staff. 2. Money & Payments > Carry some cash (Colombian Pesos) as smaller businesses may not accept cards, including the hotels in Suesca. > Use ATMs inside malls or banks for added security. 3. Transportation > In Bogotá, traffic can be heavy—plan extra time for travel. > Domestic flights are often the fastest way to move between cities. > We do not recommend hiring a car if you are not from Colombia. 4. Health & Altitude > Bogotá and Suesca are at high altitudes, 2600m above sea level—stay hydrated and take it easy on arrival. Trust me (Charis here), it will take a few days to adjust. Try to avoid strenuous activities, or anything that makes your heart race. > Drink bottled or filtered water, especially in smaller towns.
5. Cultural Tips > Colombians are warm and hospitable—greetings are important! Saying "Buenas" to people face-to-face goes a long way. You will even notice people will say goodbye to strangers in a cafe when they leave. > Be patient; things can move at a more relaxed pace than in some Western countries. > Please do not wear any drug affiliated clothing / slogans. Pablo Escobar brought a lot of pain to the country and he is not a great figurehead the Western media makes him out to be. Please be sensitive to this. 6. Language > Spanish is the official language, and English isn’t widely spoken, including guests at our wedding! Learning a few basic phrases can go a long way (e.g., gracias, por favor, cómo estás?). > Google Translate or a translation app can be very helpful. You will need them.
Fresh! Between 9-17 degrees, with likely rain.
