We met in college through a mutual friend. There wasn't much of a conversation after that first meeting but we would always see each other in the library. I noticed that James always had a study room which was very hard to come by. Most of the time he would be studying alone so one day I asked if I could come study in the room with him. He said yes and from there our friendship grew. Whenever James had a free study room I'd come and bug him. I was pretty grateful for the space, since the library would always be packed, so I offered to drive him to his car, off-campus. It was always funny how he would stuff his 6'5 self into my tiny 2004 Volkswagen Jetta. His knees would be in his chest and he always had to do a lunge to get out the car. We always had a great time filled with interesting conversation, tons of jokes and non-stop laughs.
Lauren and I met back up in 2017. She called me out of the blue asking to go to breakfast. We had both just gotten out of church and I had the idea of going to First Watch, in Hampton. We met up had some good food, great laughs and had a mini photoshoot. I later asked if she wanted to hang out and go bowling. I did hold my own but she served me about 4 Ls on two feet. There was an interest there, followed with a couple of other hangouts but nothing ever progressed since Lauren was moving to Charlotte.
James and I hadn't been in much contact since I left VA in 2017. We'd like a few pictures on social media or said hello every once in a while but never had much conversation. James reached out to me around Thanksgiving time, wondering if I was coming home but I told him I wouldn't be home until December. He wanted a rematch from the last time I had beat him. I told him not to waste his money and that I'd let him win. He insisted on having a rematch which led me to text him " You asking me out?" I was completely joking assuming he would say it was just two friends catching up. Instead he said "hmmm, would you like to go on a date with me?" I was definitely shocked, since I was joking, but I said "yes I would, lol." So we made arrangements for the following Monday. Monday comes around and to be honest I was in a lazy mood. I hadn't been dating in a while and was perfectly fine canceling to stay in the house. My mom and sister convinced me otherwise which prevented me from making the biggest mistake of my life. Mind you I hadn't seen him in years so when he came to the front door to pick me up for our date, I was completely surprised. My old college friend was FINE, OKAY! HANDSOME and FRESH as ever! More than anything he was the perfect gentleman; opening the doors, letting me sit first, praying over our meals and making me laugh from the time he picked me up. We got dinner and had our rematch. Of course I let him win this time! The date was absolutely amazing and even better when James expressed his intentions for dating me. The night ended with a great conversation and realizing we were more connected than we thought. Our families had grown up across the street from one another and there was a 50+ year friendship between the families. Who would've thought?! Since our first date we've been inseparable and couldn’t be more happier!
