Chantal and Jonathan first met on August 18, 2019, just one day after Chantal moved into her freshman dorm at Vanderbilt. Excited to begin her collegiate swimming career, she joined a few new friends at “McGugin House,” where several upperclassman football players lived. Jonathan, a junior and starting offensive lineman, immediately caught her eye the moment she walked into the house. Working up the courage to speak to Jonathan, Chantal playfully asked if he and another player were brothers—because they both had hazel eyes. That lighthearted exchange sparked a long conversation, during which they discovered they had grown up only 20 minutes apart in Georgia, attending rival high schools. They both were even surprised to learn that Jonathan had once played football against her brother, Drew, a few years prior. For both of them, that first night felt unexpectedly like home. Although they exchanged numbers the first night they met, their early conversations through text soon fizzled a week later, and they went their separate ways. Nearly a year later, in July 2020, Jonathan reached out after seeing Chantal’s SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition on Instagram. His simple “Long time, no talk” message reignited the spark, and the two quickly began reconnecting. When they returned to Vanderbilt in August 2020, life on campus was very different due to the pandemic. Amid the uncertainty, they found comfort in one another. Their first get-together was spent watching anime—Jonathan’s favorite and something entirely new to Chantal. They laughed, bonded, and from that night forward, became inseparable. The two spent countless days meeting up after their respective class schedules and long practice days to relax and unwind with one another. After a few weeks had gone by, the two had their first official date on September 19, 2020, at Martin’s BBQ in Nashville, and just a few weeks later, on October 4, Jonathan asked Chantal to be his girlfriend. Over the past five years, their relationship has grown through countless shared experiences. They’ve celebrated holidays traveling back and forth home to Atlanta, taken beach trips that became favorite traditions, and leaned on each other through seasons of change—sometimes even loss. Together, they’ve accomplished so much: earning 4 college degrees between them, each completing a Bachelor's and a Master's at Vanderbilt. Now making their home in Nashville, they have built a life rich with love, laughter, and growth. What began as a chance encounter at McGugin House blossomed into something timeless—two lives once running in parallel now joined together, guided by faith, timing, and an undeniable bond. Every step of their journey has been touched by the invisible strings that connected them long before they knew it, a reminder that their love was always part of God’s plan. As they begin this new chapter, they look forward to forever—celebrated in the presence of cherished family and friends who have been woven into their story from the very beginning.
