How We Met

10/31/2020

We officially met on Facebook Dating, when Chris messaged me on Halloween with what might be the boldest opening line ever: “Happy Halloween! I know I don’t look like much, but I will buy you tacos and rub your feet.” Considering my love for tacos (and the fact that he loves them just as much), it was a pretty solid start. As it turns out, we also had a mutual friend who had been trying to play matchmaker long before this. I had refused to message Chris back then, insisting I wasn’t about to reach out to some guy I didn’t know- but apparently, he still had a hand in convincing Chris to message me. After talking on Facebook for a bit, I gave him my number, and we quickly fell into hours-long phone calls for weeks. I’ll admit, I kept putting off going on a date with him because I wasn’t quite ready for something new- but Chris didn’t give up. He was patient and sweet, but determined. Before our first date, Chris confidently told me he was going to kiss me, and I very confidently told him that was absolutely not going to happen. (I was clearly wrong.) When we finally met at one of his favorite Mexican restaurants, he brought me flowers (points earned immediately), and the conversation flowed so naturally it felt like we had known each other forever. Then, when he got up to pay, he leaned in, kissed me, and casually walked away- like it was all part of the plan. Meanwhile, I was sitting there turning about ten shades of red. From the first date, I knew there was something special about him- and it didn’t take long before I realized I was falling in love. The rest, as they say, is history... He may have followed through on the tacos and the kiss… but I’m still waiting to cash in on that foot rub. 😄

The Proposal

12/24/2024

By the time Chris proposed, we had already talked a lot about getting married. I knew he had asked his sister for advice on getting a ring, but I had no idea when it was going to happen, or that he had already gotten one. What I definitely didn’t know was that my entire family was in on it. Apparently, when the ring was delivered, it was sent to my parents’ house. At one point when we were there for my dad’s birthday, my mom had to literally toss the ring box to Chris in the bathroom because I refused to leave the room long enough for her to hand it to him like a normal person. Meanwhile, my dad lured me into the kitchen for cake, and I remember joking about Chris “falling in” in the bathroom.. But little did I know what was ACTUALLY going on. Fast forward to Christmas Eve 2024. We had just finished celebrating at my parents’ house, and looking back now, there were so many clues. My dad kept asking what Chris got me for Christmas with this weird knowing smile-like he was waiting for something that clearly hadn’t happened yet. (Spoiler: it had not.) We went home that night, I changed into some comfy clothes, threw my hair up, and we started opening our presents to eachother. Aidan went first, then Chris, and finally it was my turn. There was one gift from Chris that I was absolutely convinced was a Nightmare Before Christmas set we saw at Walmart-mainly because Aidan confidently told me that’s what it was. (Sir. The betrayal.) I ripped the paper and immediately got suspicious because the box was from Chris’s electric screwdriver set that I had got him previously. I said, “This is your box??” while he just smiled, acting innocent. Then came the tape. An aggressive, concerning amount of tape- which he proudly said he “learned from my mom.” If you know you know... After struggling way too long with the tape, I gave up and grabbed my crochet scissors to cut it open. He called me a cheater. I stand by my decision. Inside the box was… a roll of trash bags for weight and a Christmas gift card tin. I just stared at him. He laughed and said, “What?!” while I told him he completely fooled me. Then he starts apologizing, saying he knows it’s not much and he hopes it’s enough- which made me feel bad because it's always the thought that counts, I wasn't expecting anything crazy. So now I’m emotionally confused and fighting for my life trying to get through another layer of tape on this tiny tin. He keeps saying he had to make sure I wouldn’t find out what it was, and I’m over here thinking, find out WHAT?? Finally, I get it open. Inside is a little Christmas card that says, “Well will you? From Santa.” It took my brain a second to register what was happening, then I gasp, look up, and there he is, already down on one knee saying, “Santa got you something very special this Christmas.” And in that very romantic moment, I respond exactly how you’d expect: “Are you kidding me right now?! You’re going to make me cry! Are you serious?!” (Repeated several times, JUST in case he changed his mind mid-proposal.) He assures me he’s serious, asks me again, and through tears, confusion, and zero ability to form a normal sentence, I say yes. He puts the ring on my finger- perfect fit- and we just hug, laugh, cry, and in between sobs I keep saying, “I was NOT expecting that!” Aidan walks back in, and I immediately interrogate him because I’m still stuck on the Nightmare Before Christmas lie- but he was completely surprised too. I said "Do my parents know?!" Chris said yes, and that's how I found out my parents knew the whole time… How any of these people kept a secret for that long was baffling to me 😅 Looking back, it was completely chaotic, slightly suspicious, and absolutely perfect- because it was so us. And in the middle of all the laughter, confusion, and happy tears, it was also the moment I got to say yes to forever with my best friend. ❤️
