We fell in love with Lisbon on our first trip together a few years ago. The food and wine are delicious, views stunning, and people incredibly welcoming. While there will be some downtime to explore on the weekend, you won't regret staying a few extra days to see the city and surrounding areas such as Sintra or Cascais! The city is comfortable, safe, and easy to get around. Nearly everyone speaks great English. It can get hilly (but that's why you get such great views!) and streets are often cobblestone, so it's important to bring good walking shoes!
Upon ARRIVING, Ubers are the best way to get to your accommodation! They can sometimes take a while to arrive (~10 min), and the pickup is located in the parking garage (follow the signs!), so plan accordingly. Upon DEPARTING, please give yourself an extra hour to get through the Lisbon customs line. The line can get very long, and we've seen multiple people miss their flights by not accounting for this. Additionally, customs is misleadingly located AFTER a lot of the cafes, restaurants, and shopping. We would advise going straight to the customs line, then grabbing food etc. once you are through.
We've walked almost everywhere while exploring! Lisbon can get hilly, and many streets are made of cobblestone, so make sure to bring practical shoes and watch your step :) For longer journeys, Ubers are very easy, cheap, and safe.
In mid-September, Lisbon is generally dry with average highs of 79°F and low of 64°F.
We have grown very fond of the Principe Real and Bairro Alto neighborhoods! We find these to have more locals, great food, and cute shops. Alfama is the most historic area. It's beautiful to explore (and this is where the wedding venue is!), but can get busy with tourists. Baixa and Chiado, in addition to Avenida de Liberdade, can be quite touristy. We have not spent much time in these areas. Regardless, anywhere you stay will be lovely, and it's easy to walk between these neighborhoods to see them all!
