We were both at Arapahoe Basin hanging out on what's called the "beach," a place at the bottom of the mountain where people grill and hang out. Alexis walked by Chad and his roommate at the time, Scott. Scott recognized Alexis, having worked with Alexis at a summer camp a decade before and called out to Alexis to say 'hi.' Alexis and Chad started talking and instantly knew they had a connection.

Alexis, Chad, Alexis' parents, and some friends were headed up to the ranch on Memorial Day. Chad had told Alexis' friend, Kirstin, that he wanted to propose when they arrived on Friday, so Kirstin had brought some decorations to help celebrate the occasion. When they arrived, Alexis had to drive back out to the main road (over an hour round trip), so Chad was able to walk and have a talk with Alexis' dad, John, about wanting to propose. When Alexis returned to the house, Chad convinced her to go exploring, just the two of them (and Harley, the dog). As they walked by a creek running through the property, Alexis made a comment about how beautiful it was at that spot. Chad knew right away that this was the perfect location, so he got down on one knee right then-and-there and proposed.
