Ron and Cere's Love Story

From Friends to Forever

Cerelia and Ronald first met in Community College. She was the head of the Performing Arts Society and he was a member of the drama department. Their interactions were friendly, without any romance involved. Call it as you may, fate or a serendipity, their paths crossed again one evening in C.K. Greaves supermarket. They were no longer teenagers on the cusp of adulthood. Ronald was now a firefighter and Cerelia a High School teacher. He was surprised to see her again and their conversation was quick but effortless; courtesy of Cerelia’s friend who was standing nearby casting impatient, suspicious glances at Ronald. However, they exchanged numbers and promised to keep in touch. After weeks of phone conversations, they decided to go out for a movie. Neither was sure whether it was a date or a casual meeting as friends. The evening ended up being rather awkward and filled with nervous laughter. Despite his nerves, Ronald invited Cerelia out for dinner, however, Cerelia swiftly declined the invite. In hindsight, she admits that she was out of practice in the dating world and so nervous that she couldn’t even remember the movie plot after exiting the theatre. As months passed, their conversations over the telephone grew longer, and they met up frequently for lunch dates. The more time they spent together, the deeper their connection became, and the more Ronald’s courage grew. One evening, with his heart beating a thousand mph, he mustered the courage to sneak their first kiss. He finally confessed his feelings and though it was a moment that changed everything, Cerelia could not admit that she felt the same way. For a year, they continued to date casually and started hanging around each other’s friends and families. It seemed that everyone knew the direction in which their relationship was heading... except Cerelia. Every time Ronald asked her to be his girlfriend, she would reply “boy, leave me alone please” or change the topic entirely. After a yearlong pursuit, Cerelia finally agreed to make their relationship official. They instantly became an integral part of each other’s lives as they experienced the joys of love and supported each other through life’s challenges. After 3 years together, Cerelia won a scholarship to do her MSc. degree in Taiwan. This was one of the most difficult decisions they had to make, but after much thought and prayer, they decided to stay together for the years that she would be away. Over the three years, they faced obstacles— different timezones, miscommunications, and long-distance love struggles. Each time Cerelia planned to return home, something unfortunate would happen. Often, they asked themselves if all of this was worth it and whether they would survive the time apart. However, they found solace in nightly video calls, daily prayer time, sharing stories, laughter, and love. They were also supported by a strong community that reminded them that the time apart would not last forever. They learned to resolve arguments with patience and understanding, strengthening their relationship with every challenge they overcame. Finally, Cerelia returned home. With the help of Ronald’s family, Cerelia returned to St. Vincent without Ronald knowing and surprised him at the airport. Their reunion was filled with tears, warmth and joy. They instantly picked up where they left off, their bond now closer than ever. They had promised each other that they would spend some time getting to know each other all over again before making any lasting decisions. After two beautiful years together, Ronald knew he did not want to wait any longer. One evening, on Young Island’s beach under the starlight, he proposed, his heart racing with anticipation. “Will you marry me?” he asked, holding out a ring that shimmered like their shared memories. Cerelia’s eyes filled with tears of happiness as she said, “Yes!” Their love story, from friends, blossomed into a beautiful promise of forever.
