How We Met

Persistence is Key

Mickey and I met a few years ago. We would talk in the cafeteria: we always used to get breakfast at the same time. We didn't talk much else until the night before our Junior year at Saint Martin's started. My roommate (TiAnna), our friend (Sally), and I wanted to go see who lived in the apartment we had lived in the year before. We ran upstairs, knocked on the door, and then foolishly hid behind the wall nearby. It was Mickey who opened the door and kept looking around for what felt like several minutes, persistent as always. Finally, TiAnna stuck her head out from behind the wall, and Mickey spotted her. Since Mickey and TiAnna knew each other better than the rest of us, we started to hang out with Mickey and his friend Dorny. From then on, we saw each other often, hung out often. I was trying not to like him and eventually, his persistence paid off, and I fell in love with him. I found out later on that he wasn’t supposed to be living in my old apartment, in my old room. He was supposed to live in a house off campus but that fell through. He was supposed to live in the room opposite of the one I used to live in but the other roommate didn’t show up so he took the room I had spent the last year living in. The events that occurred for us to meet up that night made us feel like something bigger than us put us together at that moment. I couldn’t feel more lucky to have this handsome, compassionate, savvy, opinionated, loving man in my life.
