Finding a partner who compliments you in every way is a rare and valuable gift. Having that person understand your lifestyle and career through first hand experience is something most people never get the joy of experiencing. Although at first glance, Joseph and Cecly might not appear to have that kind of compatibility- after all the year he was born Cecly was spending a semester abroad in London- first glances never reveal the full story. In late 2018, Cecly posted on Facebook about an event she was hosting for dancers and choreographers. Joseph saw that post on a mutual friends page and emailed her to attend. He also did some harmless Facebook research! Joseph was impressed with all the things Cecly was doing in the arts- teaching, producing, writing and choreographing. He added her to his Google Doc of “people to get to know in NYC.” In the meantime, Cecly reviewed a performance for The Dance Enthusiast in which Joseph happened to be dancing. Unbeknownst to her, the performer she was most taken with was Joseph. He moved with animal power and sinuous grace, his execution of even the most detailed choreography crystal clear. While writing that review, Cecly recognized Joseph’s name in the program and reached out to him. They chatted about his company’s upcoming audition, her job with The Dance Enthusiast, and the initial idea that brought them together- Dance Lab. Naturally, their first official meeting was dancing. Joseph invited Cecly to a class taught by the choreographer of the piece she reviewed. After class, Cecly and Joseph went to brunch with another dancer and they discussed Dance Lab further. Joseph loved the idea so much he asked Cecly if she wanted a partner to bring it to life. She did. They began meeting at coffee shops and texting often to put together their first Lab. They both shared the same passion for movement and creativity, and also the same gripes with the state of the dance community in NYC. For every idea Cecly had, Joseph had the tools to make it real. With his talent for web and graphic design, Dance Lab soon had a webpage, logo, and start date. Before long, it became obvious that they also shared a passion for one another and that something deep and very special was developing between them. Over the next few months, Joseph and Cecly fell in love and began to create a wonderful life together. Joseph moved in to Cecly’s cozy NYC apartment and immediately outfitted the place with smart lights and a Google Home in every room. Cecly shared her seltzer addiction with Joseph and made him a cat daddy to the 3 best kitties in the world! Together they have started an archived record collection, traveled to Scotland, created 3 dance films and one amazing stage piece, upheld yearly trips to New Paltz, marbleized the kitchen counter top, and had their first wedding in a Bronx courthouse before Joseph took off on a national tour. Each day together, even the really sad and difficult ones, have been beautiful because they get to live them together. Happily surviving the pandemic in their tiny apartment, him teaching on Zoom all day in the living room while Cecly graded assignments on her laptop in the kitchen, sealed the deal! This outwardly unlikely couple are perfectly likely where it counts! In each other they have found an unparalleled partner and friend and they truly enjoy their life together. Cecly and Joseph are so excited for Wedding II where they get to share their love, excitement and commitment with the people who mean the most to them.
