We met the modern way, at a bar. I was meeting with friends from work at a small low-key bar. You may have heard of it, PKWY Tavern. What I thought would be a few of us hanging out, turned into friends running into other friends, and a super-sized group of “friends of friends” formed. In that group was my forever. My co-worker at the time and Ernesto’s friend Krystal played matchmaker and introduced us. We didn’t speak much that night other than making plans to see each other at Life is Beautiful, a local music festival. Didn’t quite work out considering neither of us took down each other’s phone numbers. For those that know me well, I am notorious for making impractical plans after having a couple drinks. Oops! The New Year rings and I run into Ernesto all the time. Coincidence? Maybe. Fate? I think so. It was a random night out with friends in February and guess who I come across. We were enjoying each other’s company and wanted to ditch the bar scene for some one-on-one time together. I took him to my favorite Chinese restaurant and ordered almost everything on the menu. Surprised by his appetite and the easiness of conversation, I knew another date was in order. A week passes and we are both free on Valentine’s Day. While totally not planned, that became our first official date. Some more dates, a furry girl (who may have stolen my heart first), and many sushi nights later, we knew we were each other’s person.
It was over our first sushi date that I knew this would be forever. Cecilia had just graduated UNLV and was searching for her calling, while I was ten years into my career. Realizing the difference in our journeys, Cecilia joked that she wasn’t “old” like me and didn’t have plans to “settle down.” My proposal would have to wait… Three years and three continents later, I’m ready to carry out my master plan; a Christmas proposal in New York. At least I thought. March of twenty-twenty had different plans for us all. The world slowly began to reopen and back to planning I went. The day of the trip finally came and I scrambled to pack discretely, hoping to not give anything away. We landed in NYC the morning of Christmas Eve to a fun filled day. That afternoon, we got to The Rink at Rockefeller a little early (surprising right?) and I invited her for a drink while we waited. If having butterflies in your stomach existed, I planned to drown them out over Scotch. We headed back to the rink and I strapped on my ice skates, for the first time. Ever. After a few laps and my hands glued to the rails, we got our five minute warning. On the last lap I scrambled to find someone to capture the moment and spotted a teenage girl. I told her about the proposal, handed her my phone and wished for the best. I pretended to get ready for a photo and while Ceci angled to her “good” side, I got down on one knee. At that exact moment, my mind went blank. I forgot my plans, forgot my speech, heck, I even forgot to take off my face mask. A nervous “will you marry me?” came out and she screamed ”yes!” Unsure of what to do next and my ice skate glued to the rink, Ceci wasted no time taking the ring and putting it on her finger. After cheers from the crowd, she helped me up and we left an engaged couple! Next up was getting the oversized ring to fit. That’s another story, saved for another day.
