Our First Date

It was a steamy July morning in DC's Georgetown waterfront. The air was ripe with humidity and potential. He sported a form-fitting cycling kit and she looked sleek in a black t-shirt and leggings. After weeks of witty banter, it was their first date. They decided on a bike ride. Flavia styled herself a hardcore rider - her aptitude limited to darkly lit Flywheel studios. While Chris routinely corrected anyone who called him a "biker." "We prefer the term cyclist," he was known to say back then. They first laid eyes on each other as Flavia emerged from a nearby WC - a sign of her tiny bladder that he was about to become very familiar with. Chris watched her wipe excess hand sanitizer on her leggings before she realized he stood but a few feet away. As Flavia walked over, she immediately noticed the dimples in his smile. He was much taller than she imagined - what joy! She was smitten. Despite the sanitizer, Chris beamed at Flavia’s auburn locks, bright eyes, and figure. “Nice,” he grunted to himself. The fairytale began. After the initial first date giggles, Chris used their first conversation as an opportunity to “explain” the functionality of a road bike. He emphasized critical safety signals and the importance of not being distracted by music (to Flavia’s dismay!). A few minutes later, they mounted their bikes and started the route to Bethesda. Within minutes, Flavia naturally forgot everything Chris had instructed and almost collided, head-first, into a group of “bikers” coming the other way. You could say her Wheelflew. Quickly brushing the branches and leaves from her hair, Flavia smiled sheepishly. Chris held out his hand. As the quest – “date” - settled in and they rode up the leafy trail from Georgetown to Bethesda, Chris and Flavia took their time discussing the meaning of life, family, interests, and firing off flirty jokes. They enjoyed smoothies and more conversation when they got to Bethesda, and continued their conversation riding side-by-side back to DC. Hours later, when it was time to depart, they embraced in a warm hug. The first of many.
