Caylie and Garrett first crossed paths at the University of Texas at Arlington, where an icebreaker challenge made them friendly rivals. Both were assigned as group leaders in a competition to build the tallest tower. Garrett’s team built a classic structure—tall, sturdy, and impressive. Caylie’s team? They taped a piece of paper to the ceiling and stretched it all the way down to the floor. The professor never defined what a “tower” was, so by technicality, Caylie’s team won! Garrett, who has always loved a good debate, playfully challenged the idea. The back-and-forth was all in good fun, and by the end of it, the two had sparked a friendship—and quietly caught each other’s eye. The next semester, fate gave them another nudge. On a whim, both decided to skip class one day. By chance, they bumped into each other while playing hooky, and with no plans, decided to hang out. What started as a spontaneous afternoon turned into eight hours of conversation. A week later, Garrett asked Caylie out, and the rest is history. P.S. For their first anniversary, Caylie gifted Garrett a signed note admitting that her team’s creation was, in fact, not technically a tower. Garrett promptly had it laminated—and still keeps it in his bedside drawer to this day.
