How We Met

April 20, 2013

Once upon a time in foggy San Francisco, young Catherine and Nicholas were two strangers working at restaurants in different parts of the city. The two had a mutual friend, Chad, who had worked with Cathie at Son’s & Daughters, and with Nick at Atelier Crenn. One day while cleaning chanterelle mushrooms, Nick’s name had come up in conversation and Cathie’s coworkers desperately wanted to set her up with a “cute white guy from Detroit,” but Cathie had a strict rule about not dating men who hailed from states shaped like hands, so she was uninterested in romantic pursuits with a man who she would later learn seared a perfect steak. Luckily, Cathie’s coworkers were relentless in both creating incredible meals for tech sales guys in matching fleece vests, as well as making Cathie text a man who loves blue. Finally being more aggressive to move things along, Chad handed Cathie a paper towel with Nick’s name and phone number, letting her know that Macaulay Culkin’s doppelganger was waiting for her text message. Cathie finally gave in and texted Nick. Cathie tried to arrange a date the following day, but we all know that Nick not only looks great in a suit, but also can be quite convincing, and the two met the very same day at beloved SF dive bar, The Tempest. Nick sent Cathie a selfie prior to the meeting so that Cathie would know who her Casanova was upon arrival and didn’t fall into the arms of another Fernet-drinking hipster with full tattooed sleeves. The date consisted of Moscow mules and Cathie asking Nick if he liked the Blackhawks instead of the Red Wings, which is an embarrassing faux pas for anyone, especially someone who grew up in a family who loves hockey. Cathie redeemed herself once she started talking about stats and players, and Nick must have been feeling forgiving that day, because the two souls are getting married, and are so excited to celebrate their love with you.

The Proposal

December 31, 2019

We had plans for New Years Eve. We were going to go to dinner in San Francisco with some friends and then go out to the bars and ring in the New Year all together. A few days before the 31st, Nick asked me if we wanted to go to Twin Peaks before meeting with our friends and 'have a beer, like old times.' (when we lived in SF, we would go to Twin Peaks and have a beer after our service and just talk about work and whatever else was going on.) I really liked this idea because it was so special. Fast forward to the morning of NYE, we arrived at Twin Peaks and sat on a retaining wall and looked over the city. It was the most gorgeous day. No clouds, fog, or wind. It was warm and beautiful. We talked about what we wanted to accomplish in 2020 and what our goals were. At some point, Nick went to the restroom and I was left there to myself. After a few minutes to myself to reflect, I went and found him. He said "lets go stand in the dirt and look at the view a bit more." After about 15 seconds, someone came and started talking to us. Asking if we came here often and then asking our names. When I turned to shake his hand, I saw that he had a camera. Nick saw my face and he knew that I knew what was about to happen. He told us that he was going to take some photos and to act normal. I then looked at Nick, he dropped down to one knee, and then asked me to marry him.
