Catherine, a Bay Area native, was living in San Francisco and working as a SoulCycle instructor. Spenser, originally from Los Angeles, had moved to San Francisco to complete his residency training at UCSF in head and neck surgery. They were both exploring the dating scene and had turned to dating apps because, let's be real, nobody meets their significant other in person these days. It was mid-October and Spenser came across Catherine's profile on Hinge - she immediately caught his eye - so he liked her profile and waited to see if she would take the bait and like his too. Catherine saw Spenser's profile and was struck by how handsome, smart, friendly, and fun Spenser appeared in his profile...or at least this is what Spenser assumed when he saw that she liked his profile too. For those of you familiar with how these dating apps work, once two people "match" (or like each other's profiles), they have the opportunity to start a text conversation. Unfortunately, the conversation between the two of them didn't last long - Spenser asked Catherine on a date, she said she was available on Thursday, Spenser responded that he wasn't available that day but could do ANY OTHER DAY, and Catherine didn't respond...in her defense she was only available on Thursday and he wasn't. Spenser followed up several times with attempts to reschedule their date, even going as far as saying "I have 30+ matches on here but I keep coming back to you..." (who could resist those endearing words **eye roll**). Meanwhile, on Catherine's side of the story, the Hinge algorithm had made a serious miscalculation and recommended her cousin Kyle, who was also single at the time and living in San Francisco, as her most compatible match. Understandably, Catherine lost some faith in Hinge after this suggestion and deleted her profile. A month or so went by and Catherine and Spenser continued to live their independent lives. Catherine eventually decided to give Hinge a second chance, so remade her profile and again put the future of her love life in the hands of the all-knowing Hinge algorithm. It didn't take long before Spenser came across Catherine's profile again on Hinge. This time around, however, things went much differently...because Spenser made sure he was free on Thursday before asking her out again. Their first date was at Blackbird Tavern on December 1st. Spenser offered to pick her up for the date, thinking that she would likely say no...shockingly she said yes. As one would expect, given that Catherine and Spenser are getting married, the first date went perfectly...other than that Spenser was late to pick Catherine up, he tried to pick a bar that was halfway between he and Catherine's apartments but instead accidentally picked a bar that was down the street from his apartment, and couldn't find parking near the bar so he instead parked near his apartment and after all that effort still made Catherine walk to the bar...(okay so the date was almost perfect). Despite the few hiccups along the way, Spenser must have done something right because he and Catherine became inseparable and spent almost every day together. Their favorite things to do together included eating and drinking around the city, going to live music, exploring new places and traveling together, hanging out with friends, and spending long weekends in Eden, Utah at Powder Mountain Ski Resort. Powder Mountian will forever remain a very special place to Catherine and Spenser because this is where Spenser, on January 2nd, exactly 13 months and 1 day from when they met, asked Catherine to marry him.
